Campbell, an engineer with extensive experience in telecommunications in Canada, has been appointed general manager of NorthwesTel, the telephone company serving Yukon, western Northewst Territories and Northern British Columbia. Mr. Campbell, who was formerly assistant general manager, operations for Canadian National Telecommunications, the parent organization of NorthwesTel, takes -up his new duties this month at the company’s headquarters in:Whitehorse: He succeeds Robert J. Wells, who is rejoining CN Telecommunications headquarters in Toronto. Mr. Campbell, a native of Maxville, Ontario, grad- uated with a degree in civil engineering from McGill University in Montreal. While still a stu- dent he worked for two summers in the north- west on the CN Telecommunications microwave system being built between Grande Prairie, Alberta, and Alaska. On graduation he returned to the north as an en-. gineer with the federal department of works in Whitehorse. He joined CN Telecommunications -in 1962 and worked on the construction of the coast-to-coast CNCP microwave system. He was based in Jasper, Alberta and Hope, B.C., and was responsible for the aerial tramways built to ser- vice some of the microwave sites on remote mountaintops. After a brief period with CN System Sneieenine in Montreal he joined a CN Telecommunications group which acted as consultants to the Depart- - ment of National Defence in Ottawa. On comple- tion. of this project in 1968 he returned to CN Telecommunications headquarters as supervisor of civil engineering and construction. Following a period as a special planning assistant he was named assistant chief engineer for CN Telecommunications in 1973. He became regional manager of the organization’s Ontario region in 1976 and was promoted to assistant general manager, operations in 1978. Mr. Campbell’s spare time activities include sailing and public speaking. He is president of the Oakville Toastmasters Club. Mrs. Campbell is the former Joy Pickering. the couple has two daughters - eben 12, and Wendy, 10. Parboil your bacon before frying - not cause so much rheumatism. Be sanitary about your eating and the camp - do not pollute the waters and the atm osphere. Highway officials report that several route mark- ers in the Whitehorse area have been stolen, as have markers near the Canol Road. -In one instance, the thieves could not remove the bolted sign from its metal post and they ran over the sign post to break it and PeMOye post and | sign. Unauthorized removal of the signs constitutes an offence under the Criminal Serle: and can result in a jail term. The signs range from $40 to $100 in cost to the government and highways department officials have alerted the RCMP to the problem and re-° quest the assitance of the general public in report- ing and thefts.
