October 12, 1998 SPORTS Over The Edge Page 13 Rugby Tour by Jamie Kerr, Ryan Greenfield, and Brett Seiler As sleet pounded the streets of Prince George early on October 3, the mem- bers of the UNBC Men’s and Women’s Rugby Club climbed into their vehicles and set off for a weekend rugby extrava- ganza in Terrace. After a long six hour drive, the once sleepy players had transformed them- selves into a rugby machine. The women’s team arrived only min- utes before the kickoff, but they proved that sit- ting in a cramped vehi- cle for six hours, would not hinder them. The women played a hard hitting, down in the trenches game. They put on an impressive showing for their first game of the year and ended up with a 6-6 tie. The men’s first game was a match to be proud of. Early in the game Glen Shortreed scored on a penalty kick. This score gave the young UNBC team a momentum that the Terrace veterans could not slow down. Even while UNBC was con- trolling the play in the Terrace end, a speedy Terrace back sneaked through for a long-range try. This put Terrace ahead for a brief period, however, UNBC fought back with a fury. They punished the Vetians both offensively and defensively. Billy “wing for now” Carpenter showed his impressive speed and maneuver- ability when he scored the next try for UNBC. Mike “Chi Chi the exper- imental monkey” Speakman __ continued the pressure by scoring UNBC’s final try. As the game came to a close, UNBC’s dominance was soured by a Terrace try. The great over-all performance by UNBC allowed them to hold on to a 15-12 victo- ry. The evening was filled with socializing and fre- quenting the local establishments. The next morning the sore and slightly dazed UNBC rugby players dragged themselves from their hotel rooms intent on extending their legacy to another day. The women had anoth- er fine day of rugby. Unfortunately their hard fought game resulted in a 2 point loss to the Terrace team. The men’s team played second, arriving only one half hour ijate for the game. After over- coming the cold sweats and disorientation, the two teams faced off for their second match. It turned out to be a hard hitting campaign and both teams had trouble holding onto the ball. The UNBC used all their wits to earn a 12-12 tie. UNBC players Jamie Dewintz and lan Ramsey scored for UNBC. After an impressive, and successful week- end, the club is looking forward to attending the Thanksgiving “Gobble” tournament in Abbotsford. The UNBC club is busy planning an improved version of last-year’s Halloween blast. The Halloween party is open to all stu- dents and faculty who have reached the magi- cal age of 19.
