UNDER THE COVERS by Michelle Dubuc It was a pitifully small crowd that assembled in the Multiplex Monday night for the Melanie Doane/Great Big Sea concert. It’s also really too bad: because a lot of people missed out on a great show by two of Canada’s best perform- ers. Melanie took the stage with all the exu- berance other perform- ers might have reserved for a larger crowd, and wowed the audience with an amazingly eclec- tic and energetic hour- long performance. Possessing a_ beautiful voice only hinted at on her radio _ singles, (“Adams Rib,” Waiting for the Tide,” etc), she quickly mesmerized the crowd. Melanie is a very multi-talented per- former; as well as singing, she played fid- dle, keyboards, and gui- tar during the course of her set, once even using these talents to play an Page 3- UNBC stu- dents uncover an ancient creature. Canadian uni- |Audience __ interaction was also a big part of the show: her drummer took a photo of the audi- ence in mid-set that is to versSities. Great Big Sea be posted on www.melaniedoane.com , and she also managed to incorporate a little Prince George culture (i.e. beer and_ the Cougars) into the best rendition of the Backstreet Boys fav “l Want it That Way,’ I’ve ever heard (given that it does not take much to outdo the Backstreet . Boys). Great Big Sea are always a lot of fun, and Monday night was no exception. These guys obviously love what they do and put every ounce of energy into doing it. The audience may have been small but the ones who came were die-hard fans - two Newfoundland flags waved proudly throughout the night and the crowd didn’t stop moving once. GBS played a good mix of songs from all four of their albums, concen- trating of course on their newest, “Turn.” Cranking out favourites like “When ’'m Up (| Can’t Get Down),” “Runaway,” “Ordinary Day,’ and oth- ers, the Newfoundland foursome showcased CAMPUS their unique blend of Celtic roots. Attempting to summarize each GBS member's duties is diffi- cult - lead singer Alan Doyle also plays guitar, bouzouki, and mandolin, Sean McCann does vocals, drums, tin whis- tle, and bodran, Darrell Power handles vocals and bass, and Bob Hallett sings, plays accordion + about a mil- lion other things. Even the naming of Alan Doyle as the lead singer is a risky one: every member of Great Big Sea is an integral part of their sound: this is espe- cially apparent on their beautifully sung acapel- la numbers like “General Taylor.” Great Big Sea gave 100% during their 1 1/2 long set, and came back for two encores (one of which featured the coolest inflatable men | had ever seen - no they weren't those kind of inflatable men). Alan Doyle perhaps summed it up best when he exclaimed, “Monday night seems like a great night for a kitchen party.” It was. , Targeted Job Postings - Recruitmnet Campaigns - Employer Profiles - Resume Database - Youth Campaigns Training and Education Network - Electronic Calendar - Prospects E-Magazine It’s AH At Your Fingertips...
