Dogs, thought by some to be the first animals domesticated, have proved admirable and useful friends to men through the ages. Unfortunately this friendship has often been abused to the dogs disadvantage. It is surprising when you consider the number of people you'll meet who expect a dog to exhibit all the predictable traits of a bookshelf when its owner is not within shouting distance. What many people, dog owners and dogless alike seem to ignore, is that all animals (humans included) respond to certain instinctual drives. When they’re hungry, they look for food. When they feel threatened, they defend themselves. When they’re in need of a little entertainment, they seek it out. These drives can be channeled in a socially acceptable manner by training in most cases, but the sad truth of the matter PORTRAITS, PASSPORT PICTURES is that not all who choose to own dogs know enough about their animal to perform this necessary task. Thus, you have the dubious combination of an ignorant individual and an untrained animal. In an urban environ- ment this often leads to unfortunate consequences. These consequences are usually unfortunate for the dog; its owner can only bemoan the circumstances of his having to pay a fine to bail his pet out of the pound. Of course it is the dog that is picked up and put in a cage to await the arrival of the necessary money. There are some who feel that the legal system with its dog catchers and pounds represents an insult or something they affectionately regard as natural law. Dogs should run free, they say. That it is the right of everyone to own a dog is another treasured concept. The fact that there are people who can utter both these phrases without realizing the essential paradox in what they’re saying is, in itself, disturbing. What is more disturbing is that these people will try and put this convoluted logic into practice. If. it is the right of an individual to own a dog, then it is a responsibility of that individual to care for the animal. In this sense care means seeing that the animal is as pre- pared as possible for life in the community its owner has chosen. The animal should not be woofing about all night knocking over garbage cans, running game, or biting child- ren. If the dog finds itself in a position where this sort of behaviour becomes possible it will follow its instincts. Its owner, just as long as his sleep is not disturbed, his garb- age strewn about the lawn, nor his child bitten, will be none the wiser until authority, in the person of the dog catcher, calls him to inform him that his pet is in confin- ment. The erstwhile owner, however, feels that society has somehow wronged him. In a way he’s right. Society, in whose number he must include himself, has committed a grievous wrong. The whole idea of keeping large animals for no other pur- pose than status and domestic pleasure is somehow per- verse. Dogs should run free: the problem is people. CLASSIFIED FOR SALE 8 ft.
