16 Cassiar Courier February 1978 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS IN BRIEF Amendments to the Canada Pension a Plan have come into force as of Jan. 1. The most significant is a provision allowing CPP pension credits earned by a husband and wife during marriage to be divided equally between them if the marriage ends. This ensures that the spouses who worked in the home and therefore did not contribute directly _ will be protected by the Plan for re- tirement. This means also that an asset accumulated through the efforts i) of both spouses while they were married can be shared equally by both when the marriage is dissolved. B. CC. Ferries - Corporation has announced an economical vehicle trans- port service between Masset and Prince Rupert. One-way cost for a car on this tug and barg service will be $27.00, one quarter of the former charge of $96.00. 2 ——— x a — Increases in the Old Age Security Pen- ‘sion, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Spouse’s Allowance have gone into effect this month. The new monthly total at the single rate for persons receiving both the Old Age Security _ pension and maximum Guaranteed Income Supplement will be $261.06. For a married couple the total will be $498.00, and the Basic Old Age Secur- ity pension rises this month to $153.44 — from the present $150.43. The Department of the Secretary. of State of Canada has announced that ‘approximately 200,000 persons have applied for Citizenship February 15 and November of 1977.
