also said about giving his clothes to
The Salvation Army. Mrs. Roediger
had been very upset when this news
was communicated to her. From
this evidence, it could logically be
deduced that she had no tntention of
returning to Cloverdale that night
and that Roediger well knew it when
he sent Donald on the wild goose
chase to the tram station.

Roediger began his testimony. He
told how he had come to Canada
from Germany in 1902 and gave an
outline of his life up to the time of
meeting Mrs. Lawrence through the
medium of a “‘correspondence club.”’
They met in December, 1945, while
he was in Vancouver recovering from
an eye injury sustained in a logging
camp. He told of the wedding, and
later of his plans to sell the ranch
because the boy, Donald, was lazy
and abused his mother. It had been
his intention to get a rooming house
and let young Lawrence look after
himself. When opposition faced
him in the sale of the farm, he had
secured a job in a logging camp, and
was going to leave at once. Going to
Cloverdale to get his clothing, he
arrived at the farm in a taxi. Young
Lawrence was at the farm, and when
it was suggested that he go to the
tram station to get his mother, the
boy had become quite abusive. How-
ever he did go to the station, but on
his return, he had struck witness in
the eye, then had gone to his bed-
room. A few moments later, as wit-
ness was holding a hand to the in-
Jured eye, Lawrence had pointed a
shotgun at Roediger’s back, which
the latter struck downwards, the
shot discharging into the woodbox.
Running out to the woodshed with
Lawrence in pursuit, the latter caught
up with him, and in the ensuing
struggle, the shotgun went off
wounding the boy.

DEMONSTRATES SHOOTING

At this stage, defence counsel asked
Roediger to demonstrate how the
shooting occurred. In a hushed and
tense atmosphere, the spectators
watched counsel advance towards the
witness with the Remington shot-
gun. Belying his age and massive
build, Roediger with the agility of
a 15-year-old boy, grasped the shot-
gun and in the twinkling of an eye
had caught the weapon in a firm grip
and twisted it in such a way as to
point the muzzle to the small of the
counsel’s back. It was all over in a
flash. Had it not been for the other
testimony before the court, the dem-
onstration would have been very
convincing.
