With unique sounds of dazzling guitar effects, hypnotic keyboard sounds reminiscent of the Cars, and an instru- mental featuring the subtle sounds of explo- sions, The Magic City is more than in its own cat- egory. Lead singer/gui- tarist Mary Timony’s throaty vocals take you to the spaced-out land that revels in such song tiles as “Leon’s Space Song’, “Cosmic Ray’s’, and “Aging Astronauts” with a drifting, out-of- this-world sound surfing on digital waves compa- rable to Stereolab. Perhaps riding on the girl-rock trend being seen storming the book of the alternative scene, The Magic City never- theless opens an entire- ly new unprecedented chapter. - Kevin Milos Lynnfield Pioneers Emerge (Matador) aie emerge ag They sound like their guitars haven't been tuned in a long time and their keyboard is in drastic need of a player who doesn’t just pound on it, but Brooklyn’s Lynnfield Pioneers somehow still manage to crank out a whole mess of beautifully repulsive tunes. They takes us to a place where nobody really gives a damn and we are all having a blast in the process. Their new album, Emerge, demon- strates a variety of influ- ences including funk, r&b, hard rock, and a dash of pop for perfec- tion. They leave their harsh edge _ unculled with the lack of a bass player and spastic drum sounds, giving them a sound which is _ signifi- cant to the small selec- tion of trash-rock bands finding their way to the top that they are falling in line behind. - Kevin Milos Over The Edge SoundScape is a new review column encompasing music and its many talents. Zuzu’s Petals Badly Needed Life Elsewhere UNBC can be proud of the fact that this is the first full album to be released by UNBC pro- fessors including Rob Fry and Phil Higham. Badly Needed Life Elsewhere is a subtle mix of sensually sam- pled guitar and key- board sounds. With song titles such as “Foreplay” and “Sex Song”, Higham finds the sexual connotations that match this generation when the chants lines like “...and your sex is cold on my face...” and “..lick your lips, tell me that its over...” to the beat of a distant drum machine. In other tracks such as “Montreal”, “lreland”, and “Emily”, one has the opportunity to listen to ~ music with a soul and a meaning not lost to the listener. Humbly relat- ing to the empty sounds that compliment first- time garage recordings, there is something to be said for the versatility of sounds this duo is able to produce and suc- cessfully mix into listen- able, focused allitera- tions.
