A Gribhitte THE LATE Const. Harold Calvert, whose picture appears in this issue in The Glim Peddlers, served as a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force. Shot down over Ger- many, he forfeited his life in attempting to escape from his Nazi captors. The following tribute was received by his bereaved wife: Gepruft 46 June 18th, 1942 Dear Mrs. Calvert: As the senior British Officer in this camp and on behalf of all the officers and N.C.O.’s and men, I wish to convey to you our very heartfelt sympathy on your hus- band’s death. As you know he was making COWICHAN CREAMERY ASSOCIATION Duncan, B.C. — Cobble Hill, B.C. e Cowichan Creamery Butter Cowichan Creamery Eggs e Creamery Poultry Feeds Creamery Dairy Feeds e “Porty-Eight Years of Service” a brave attempt to escape from his captivity and met his fate in the early morning of the 20th of May. However, I know from his companion, Sergt. Sugden, that he was killed instantly and therefore felt no pain. I never had the honour of meeting your gallant husband but the reports that I have received of him clearly indicate that he was a man with his own strict code of honour and possessing great personal courage. In making his attempt to escape he was living up to the traditions of his forefathers to whom security and safety meant nothing, if it did not tally with their sense of duty and love of adventure. Therefore, although in honourable captivity, duty called and he answered it. I would be pleased if you would convey our sincere sympathy to your husband's mother in Canada. Yours very sincerely, H. M. A. Day, Wing Commander. THE clerk of a North Coast (N.S.W.) shire in his monthly report recommended a bridge be constructed over a creek in a re- mote part. One of the councillors was in- dignant and interjected: “I object to a bridge being built over such a narrow creek; why, I could spit halfway across!” The President: “I would like to remind the councillor that he is out of order.” “Out of order!” came heatedly from the councillor. “Blimey, if I were in good order I could spit right across that creek!” IN a small church a child was to be baptized. The young minister, taking the infant in his arms, said: “Beloved hearers, no one can foretell the future of this little child. He may grow up to be a great business man like Henry Ford, or a great politician; and it is possible he might become the Prime Min- ister of England.” Turning to the mother, he enquired: “‘What is the name of the child?” “Mary Ann,” was the reply. “SAY grace, Mary, there’s a dear,” said the hostess to the little girl evacuee, as they sat down to dinner. For a moment Mary was floored. Then her eyes lit up. Drooping her head and plac- ing her hands together, she murmured reverently: “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.” 1/C CONSTABLE: “Do you know what the Commissioner said to me when I asked him to make me a Sergeant?” Constable: “No.” 1/C Constable: “Who told you?” “The Canadian Ex-Service Men’s Organization” THE CANADIAN LEGION OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE Nanaimo Branch, No. 10, B.
