COY, Manager Licensed Premises Day Phone 404 astern,’ and the engineer jumps to it, and you just avoid a nasty bump. Then finally the float and you tie up, fagged out. Per- haps another call awaits you, who knows? Just One TuHinc ArrerR ANOTHER You are in a heavy sea. Everything has to be lashed down. She’s rolling and pitching and there is no horizon. Just a foam line of angry wave. The engine stops. If she turns her beam to these seas, capsize she must. So while the engineer is repairing the defects, hanging on with one hand and working with the other, or braced against stanchion or hot cylinder to keep his feet, you scramble forward and rig up a sea-anchor, and drop it overboard hoping that it will hold the boat’s head into the wind till the engine is repaired. You have just been out on a three- week patrol, and think of a day or two with your family, resting. Perish the thought. There’s that small leak in the pilot house deck that must be patched with canvas and painted. The bilges should be pumped out, and its about time you fitted a new tackle on the boom. The lifeboat is pretty heavy and the rope is getting frayed. Then there’s work on the anchor line, and the engineer needs a hand in taking off that cylinder head. And so it goes. You are working like a beaver on the boat, when one of the boys comes down from the District Office. “Say, you fel- lows,” he calls out, “there’s going to be a big dance tonight, and we expect a lot of cars. Will you come down and give us a hand?” So that night you attend the dance, helping to park cars, and see that the revellers don’t behave too badly. Next morning, a call bright and early from the sergeant. “We just got a call that there is a boat in trouble off Long Point. I know it’s blowing pretty badly, but do the best you can,” and so off you go again. And as you purr out of the harbour and feel the rise of the sea you toy with the idea of asking for a transfer to shore establishment. Fairly regular hours. Home cooked meals.
