dogs” or “saving the dogs.” He won't
see one of them hurt, no sir.

“About one cat in twenty won't
tree,” he told me, “and if you don’t
want a dog killed or injured, you’ve
got to increase the pack. More dogs
will distract a panther, and he won't
have time to pick on one of them.”

I had heard this story about Jimmy
tackling a cougar with his bare hands.

Scout even trys climbing a tree to get at a
cougar. One of the hounds used to avenge the
death of an Indian boy at Kyuquot in 1949
Scout has a formidable record of cat hunting.

I asked him about it, and he grinned
in a sort of confused way. Then he
told me about it—his way:

Fought Cougar Barehanded

It seems that a few years ago on the
Cowichan River, he and Game
Warden Rex Hayes were hot on the
trail of a cougar. Dewar was un-
armed, and he got to the spot where
the dogs had treed. Jimmy thought he
would get the cougar to change his
position to make a better shot for
Hayes. So he threw a snowball at the
big cat—and hit him square on the
nose! The startled cougar momentar!-

ly lost his hold on the limb, then the
bark started to strip off under his
claws. Down he came with a thump
among the dogs, and lashed into one
of them. The cat and the hound
rolled over and over in frenzied com-
bat, and Jimmy, fearful for the dog’s
life, did the only thing he could
think of. He flung himself on top of
the tawny beast and tried to choke it!
He got a terrific laceration from the
armpoint across his chest, and another
on his leg. So mixed up was the
struggle that Rex Hayes couldn’t get
in a shot for a few seconds. However,
they got the cougar and the dog was
none the worse.

I asked Jimmy what was the longest
time he had trailed a cougar. “Nine
hours,” he said, and added, “I was
helping the dogs over the windfalls
at the finish!”

Shortest hunt was last May at
Northwest Bay. He got a call in the
afternoon that a cougar had been seen
and arrived at the spot about seven in
the evening. Getting out of his car he
asked a bystander where the cougar
had been last seen.

“Right over there,” said the pedes-
trian, pointing to a bank beside the
highway. Jimmy walked over with
rifle and looked down the bank—
right into the eyes of a cougar lying
