married. We went back to Dawson on our honeymoon. How strange it was to return to the ghost town. The dance hall still stood there facing the Yukon. I wanted to go in and look around, I told Johnny. “I want to bring back the past, just for a few moments. When I walk out of that door I will be closing it on my old life.” I walked about the hall. The red plush curtains, old and dusty, were still there on the stage. For a moment I could see my- self up there in a red-spangled dress, kicking my legs and singing, my eyes dancing, as I watched the men’s glasses raised, toasting me in wine, in champagne. G. For a second I could hear the music, the piano and the violin and the drums. Then it was all over. And I was just a little old lady standing there. Could I really have been “Klondike Kate?” Later the dance hall burned down. I am told there was a second gold-rush to stam- pede the ashes. For gold dust had been thrown around that stage for years. It had sifted down through the lumber, and it proved as rich as any strike for the men who panned it. SAFE Haven AT LAsT Johnny lives on his claim on Matson Creek. My health is not rugged enough for the long winters on the Klondike. Johnny insists that I live in my little home in Bend, Oregon. Every other year I go up there to be with him. Twice a year he makes the long mush to send me a letter. I worry about him. I beg him to come out and live in Oregon. But gold is in the sourdough’s blood. He can Klondike Kate meets Cary Gfant and Ted Donaldson in Hollywood not leave it. He always thinks he'll find another big pocket of gold. For Christmas he sends me gold nuggets for jewellery. But mind you, he is not rich. He takes out only enough gold to permit us to live modestly. Sometimes he traps furs. I have some martens I treasure because my Johnny sent them to me. During the years I have learned to love Johnny. He is no longer the “funny little yam and yelly man” to me. He is the best man on earth. I take in b@arders to help out and just recently I wa oe Hollywood where Colum- bia Studios were making a motion picture entitled Klondike Kate. The title refers to me but no movie could possibly cover all of my life. I've done so much living they couldn’t possibly get it all on the screen in an hour’s show. In Hollywood I found myself, at sixty- three, a white-haired woman, being inter- viewed by the press—being banqueted. And Bob Burns invited me to appear on his radio show, to introduce “Klondike Kate.” It seemed like a dream. My life was stil sidered interesting! Even interesting e for the title of a movie. If I had it to do all over again, I wo change it—not one little thing. Many T used to think, what's the use? But ; can make one person completely h you have not lived in vain. I know I made my Johnny completely happy. A co doing I am happy myself. Mush on and smile—that’s always my motto.
