Further enquiries at the er office and at the bank disclosed that cashier from whom Percey had drawn £66 had commenced that day’s payments ha bundle of one-pound notes, the serial mbers of which were supplied as 38.H.514001 to 514500, and that it was Telephone PAcific 3521 CEPERLEY, ROUNSEFELL & CO. It will be remembered that when a mi- nute search of the cabin and the deceased’s effects was made only the sum of 4s. 7d. was found, which was in the pocket of the clothes worn by the deceased, and therefore robbery now appeared to be the motive for the crime. CHIEF STEWARD SUSPECTED Intensive enquiry was still being made to establish the identity of the Chief Steward, but by Tuesday, April 11th, the enquiries had not met with any success. On that day, however, officers detailed to make further enquiry of all persons who had been em- ployed on or near the ship were successful in locating a Cargo Supervisor who had been employed on the Pacific Shipper on the afternoon of April 6th and who had seen Percey, in company with the Chief Steward, ascending the steps to the bridge during that afternoon. This witness at first could give no information to assist in identifying the Chief Steward other than to confirm the description which had already been supplied by several others. He also had seen the Chief Steward on odd occasions in various licensed houses in the Docks area. He was pressed for any other information which would assist to identify the man, and some time later he remembered that he had once seen the suspected Chief Steward in a licensed house in conversation with another Chief Steward whose ship was then in the Docks. This Chief Steward was immedi- ately located and he was able to say that the only Chief Steward he had had a drink with in the named public house was a man named Galbraith. Reference to the list previously obtained from the Shipping Offices furnished the full name and address of a Chief Steward named James Galbraith, whose home was just out- side the boundary of this city. Photographic negatives of the finger im- pressions found on the bottles and the glasses in the deceased’s cabin had been forwarded, together with the fingerprints of the deceased for elimination, to the headquarters of the West Riding Constabulary, Wakefield, for expert examination and comparison gener- ally. REYNOLDS fying the suspected Chief Steward as the man named Galbraith, the Wakefield Police were asked to compare the finger impressions on the bottles and glasses with those of James Galbraith, whose record and finger impressions were already known. Within an hour a reply was received from the Fingerprint Department at Wakefield that a small portion of a finger impression found on one of the drinking glasses bore seven points of comparison with a fingerprint of James Galbraith in their files. Whilst this fact strengthened the information then available, it was made quite clear that a fingerprint expert could not be called from Wakefield to give definite evidence that the impression on the glass was that of one of Galbraith’s fingers, as the number of points of comparison was insuficient for the pur- pose of giving evidence in the Courts. Enquiries were then made at Galbraith’s home, where it. was elicited from his mother that her son had not returned home on the night of Thursday, April 6th, but had returned about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 7th. He then told her that he had been working all night victualling a ship; that the ship had sailed and that he had got good pay and bonus from the Captain for getting it victualled in time. He did not say how much he had drawn but his mother said he THE YORKSHIRE & PACIFIC SECURITIES LIMITED Head Office, Huddersfield, England G. Peter Kaye, President F. W.
