6 over THE EDGE-Monday October 17, 1994 STUDENT ASSOCIATION UPDATE By David Beck In a few weeks time there will be a referendum put to the student body on whether or not it would like a student association to represent its members. The directors of this association will be elected by the students and the association would be an autonomous society registered under the B. C. Society Act. The UNBC Student Association would be like any other student associations at other universities. It would be responsible for addressing any concerns that students might have, raising money for student activities and clubs, and holding dances, parties, etc. In short it would be an association whose main purpose is to benefit the students. Currently there is a constitution which was based on UBC, SFU and CNC's constitutions. The constitution has been approved by the B. C. Society's branch and its incorporation fee has been fully paid. The constitution took approximately six months to be drafted and then another sixteen months and six weeks Ay Ri FOR AN APPOINTMENT PHONE 1S 263-21 JR = #203-2289 B ; WESTWOOD DRIVE PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. to be approved by Victoria. However, as with most constitutions there are by-laws which should be revised. Under the Society's Act all by-laws can be changed at the Annual General Meeting (to be held in January). Thus, if accepted, the present constitution could be used as a stepping stone for the student body until it is amended in January. The other alternative would be to not accept the constitution and consequently start over again. The only detriment to this alternative would be that there would be no student association this year until the new constitution is passed (and that could take many months) and approved by Victoria (and this takes even longer). The Student Association meetings are open to all students and the times are posted on the board outside Student Services. Likewise a copy of the present constitution can be picked up from Student Services. HOUSING SERVICES Randall Brazzoni UNBC Housing Services is responsible for maintaining the Off- Campus Housing directory along with the day to day operation of the 274- bed residence apartment —_ building located on campus. The construction of the $7 millicn residence was accelerated in order for occupancy by students in the first part of September. The construction of the building took less than five months from thé start to finish; it is now a prominent — structure on the west side of the Prince George campus. The response from students was overwhelming with over 700 applying for residence. We received an amazing response from the community of Prince George with individuals listing over 800 different types of accomodations. With the combination of on- and off- campus _ housing , there was no lack of accomodation for students. With the construction of a new building there were some problems. Furniture has _ not arrived yet. The university is __ still waiting for furniture to be delivered. Students are taking everything in stride. All that we can hope for is_ the speedy delivery of the remainder of the furniture and for a successful year for all of the students and the university. CLUBS: FORCE ACTION FOR FUNDS By Charles Hogg Anybody trying to form a club should be very concerned about our lack of a students! association. A student's association sets the rules under which any club runs and governs the distribution of funds to these clubs. Currently we have no idea how the current club rules will change when an association forms and no access to funds from the association, which is really our money given to the association in the form of fees. While I concede these things take time, I must also a say that I was extremely disappointed by the lack of attendance at the ate last meeting and the bickering that occurred while I was there. We 23 must voice our concerns and let people know that we want a student's association as soon as possible so we can move on to bigger and better things. Show up at a meeting and let people know what you want from your students’ association. After all, it is your money that is sitting around doing nothing.
