Corcoran said that under the provincial government's fiscal framework, the Ministry of Education allocates what it feels is sufficient funds for our district. For the first time since ‘‘Restraint’’ began, the funds are not enough to cover what the district feels it needs to operate at the same level as last year, with nothing new added and with no salary increases. The District Superintendent said the Stikine School Board and the Ministry of Education differ on several points: — the total student enrolment for next year — the district average teacher salary (the Ministry doesn’t pay for certain of our teacher benefits) — Dispersion (the government allows certain funds for the distance between the schools in the district) — The number of square metres of area that our facil- ities encompass (the government budgets a certain amount of funds per square metre of area for util- ities and other building costs) — the cost of busing Through discussion with the Ministry of Education on the disputed items, our district hopes to close the gap between our needs and the funds the governments will supply. If the government doesn’t increase the funds for this budget, cuts will have to be made. Board Chairman Sherry Sethen said, “One of the goals in Stikine is not to cut teaching positions and to make cuts where they will have the least effect on the ed- ucation delivery svstem.” ! ; Questions from the parents in attendance included queries about the amount of money the district will save by closing the Good Hope Lake School ($135,000) the possibility of more playground equipment for Snowridge (funds have been requested for the equipment, but so far A Great Fundraiser for Everyone Community Campaign ’85 is a value packed product that your Group can sell to friends, neighbours and supporters. Another point brought up was that the President of the Stikine Teachers Association attends all School Board meetings, sits in on all Board and Committee discussions, except personnel, and contributes information regarding teachers’ viewpoints but has no voting power. The answer was that it hadn’t because if parents had a concern they could make a presentation to the Board. COURT NEWS Continued from Page 2. on the admitted evidence was not pointed out until after the crown counsel had.closed his case. F. Nelson, representing the Defense, pointed out to the court that a lawyer present in the courtroom for another case, had informed him that a case in County Court had been thrown out when the crown counsel failed to bring a wildlife biologist into court to testify that the animal in question in that case was indeed a moose. Since the crown in the Creyke case also did not produce a wildlife biologist as a witness, then, the defense maintains, the court must abide by the decision of a higher court and also throw out this case. Judge Varcoe adjourned the case and requested the defense lawyer produce proof of the ruling at the next court sitting. RCMP Constable Rodney Wood was charged with assault causing bodily harm. A preliminary hearing was held. Court will next sit at Good Hope Lake on June 13th. EPARGHES A \LINTBRIEUE = Pou REL xt "HAQuUE MOIS!
