S EPTEMBER 24, 3002 Game Over Over the Edge’s game review column by Brad Pranghall >> Sid Meier’s Simgolf SimGolf is primarily about constructing a series of thriving and profitable golf resorts around the world, starting each time with a mostly empty piece of land. There are 16 different courses for you to build. Unfortunately, these various loca- tions all involve exactly the same task: develop a championship 18 hole golf course. The game interface is simple and easy to use. There are three tabs, one for building the course, one for constructing buildings, and one for managing peo- ple. The design of the actual holes could not be any easier. You simply place the different components of the hole and open it for business. You can also redesign your holes on the fly, based on golfer’s comments. The graphics offer plenty of detail and character, despite being locked in at a low resolution. The sound is acceptable though sparse, featuring light background music and snippets of the sims speaking their weird little language. An interesting addition to the game is the golfing. Each course comes with a club pro, who has par- ticular abilities as a golfer. These abilities can even be improved by entering tournaments. The golfing is controlled using a-very simple and accessible system. You simply select a shot and decide where you want the ball to go. Once you get close enough to the hole, your little golfer dude taps the ball in. Overall, Simgolf is a respectable and fun management game. I give it 8.5 out of 10. >> 1503 A.D. The New World The point of 1503 AD is to found a colony, and develop it into a thriving quasi- metropolis. The player must plan the layout of the colony, placing buildings and streets, as well as managing the affairs of the colony at large, and ensuring the sup- ply of goods for the residents of the colony. There is a very nice variety of different buildings to construct in your colony, including houses, mines, farms, taverns, and fortresses. Higher level buildings become available when the colony’s population reaches a certain level and when the colonists attain a higher social standing. The technological progression in the game is quite satisfying. New technologies come along in much the same way as new buildings, and include the new buildings, as well as more advanced versions of old buildings which are mote efficient or effective at producing goods. Graphically, 1503 AD is quite nice. There’s plenty of detail, lighting and colour are pleasant, and the ani- mation is very smooth. The background music has an old, folksy vibe that’s really fitting. Sound effects are subdued, consisting mostly of sounds related to events occurring in the game. Unfortunately, there is an unnecessarily large learning curve to this game, thanks to the uninformative manual and in-game help, the pathetic tutorials, and the unnecessarily complicated interface. Overall, once you figure out how to play it, 1503 AD is an entertaining real time strategy game, with an interesting twist. I give it 8 out of 10 IS THERE A LINK Gy BETWEEN ABORTION | |*= AND BREAST CANCER? Fiesty aren’t we? Be patient with everything or you'll ram, er, run into problems.
