a New’ Residence by Courtney Raines New student residences are planned for September 1995. The plans for the new residences have been sent to contractors. The contracts must return price estimates by the 22nd of December if they wish to bid on the contract. The contract will be given in mid-January and construction is due to start in February. Since the contract for the present student residence was awarded last April, this earlier start implies an earlier finish. Gwen Campden, a student in residence, was concerned that there may be a wait for furniture again next year. "We come here and all we had was a lock on the door and a mattress on the floor," she said. She also said the Housing Services had the current residence students put forward suggestions for possible improvements to the Proposed new __ residence. Marc Chioccarello says that residence is pretty noisy. This is echoed by Laura Kozawko, who suggests better insulation in order to give the rooms better soundproofing. She would also like all the rooms to be the same size and plan. The proposed new residence will have 274 units, just like the current one. However, its rooms will be balanced. The building will be wood with a concrete floor. The staircases in the new residence will be larger than those in the current residence. Getting a furniture contract will be undertaken in January 1995 which should prevent this year's lack of furniture. Randall Brazzoni. the UNBC Housing Manager, believes there is a need for a new residence. There were 700 applications taken for the 274 available rooms last year. There are expected to be between 1000 and 1200 for next September due to an influx of new students as . well as returning students. He regards the residences as creating a sense of community for the University. If there is a continued need for on campus housing the next building will be townhouses for families or couples, Brazzoni says. However, the necessary money must come _ from donations as none is supplied by the government.
