INSPECTOR JOHN MACDONALD RETIRES A LONG and colourful career in police work terminated on December 3lst last, when with the passing of the old year, Inspector John Macdonald of the British Columbia Police commenced three months retiring leave. A Scot from the Western Isles, Inspector Macdonald started his career in law en- forcement work with the Glasgow police 46 years ago at the age of 19. He was associated with nearly all phases of police work in the big Scottish seaport, and later specialized in juvenile work. Before com- ing to Canada was juvenile officer for the whole north of Scotland and his work in this field drew favourable mention in the British House of Commons. Like many another famous Canadian police executive he left bonny Scotland to seek his fortune in the new world, and joined the B.C. Provincial Police in 1913. He was first stationed at Cumberland on Vancouver Island. Quickly distinguishing JOHN MACDONALD himself in a number of important cases Mr. Macdonald was promoted through the successive grades until he assumed execu- tive rank as Inspector in 1930. For the last 12 years Inspector Macdonald has been in charge of “B” division which includes the East and West Kootenay country and the 300-mile stretch of territory between the Cascade Mountains and the Crows Nest Pass adjacent to the Canadian- U.S. border. During his long police career Inspector Macdonald figured in some of B.C.’s most famous criminal cases, and he made a host of friends throughout interior British Columbia. One of his sons, Detective John Mac- donald is following in his father’s footsteps. “Johnny” Macdonald has been with the Provincial Police in Vancouver for the past 12 years. The many friends of the retiring Inspector will join with THE SHOULDER STRAP in extending good luck and long life to one cf the Province’s best known police executives.
