sorduroy pants, logging boots. It had the
oibbering mouth that the trainman had de-
scribed, the protruding eyes, the big white
buck teeth, and long clawlike fingers. It
swung with an easy ‘lope onto the back of
the train, pulled itself up by the rail, and
glowered with a dead icy stare, with dank,
tousled hair flying back in the wind.

Apparently it saw neither the sergeant
nor the trainman.

With these dead fishlike eyes it peered
into the darkened corner where the ruddy-
faced man was seated. The sergeant looked
over at the big fellow, unable to move a
muscle himself, for this was something out-
side of the physical.

There was a sound like steam escaping
through an engine whistle. Perhaps that
is what it was! Spellbound, the sergeant
kept watching the effect of that fascinating,
cold, stoney stare of the ghostly object: The
big passenger was unperturbed for a mo-
ment and gazed back stupidly, then resent-
fully. But suddenly the light went out of
his eyes, as he too saw what the sergeant
saw and what Carter, the trainman, saw.
He uttered a piercing shriek. The blood
drained from his face, which became pasty
and frozen in horror.

With a gurgling, gloating sort of sound
the gibbering thing was on the big man in
the next instant—teeth, claws, arms, legs
enveloping the pudgy body.

“Flint! Flint! For God’s sake!” cried
the big fellow, backing and trying to ward
the monstrosity off with his hands. He
screamed again in terror. He scrambled to
his feet, overturning the folding chair. He
staggered about the small platform, with
the dreadful throttling thing clinging to
him and overwhelming him. It seemed to
inflate and spread itself about the big man
until he seemed smothered by it, while
the sergeant sat, dumbfounded and still un-
able to move a limb. But all at once Dal-
gleish’s mind cleared. He galvanized into
action, kicking back the folding ane upon
which he had been seated, and rushed in to
the rescue. The trainman also seemed sud-
denly to arouse. The old wizened fellow
had plenty of courage. The two men
plunged in and attacked the ghostly creat-
ure, trying to pull it away from its victim.
But they found their hands passing through
the essence of it, empty, as one’s hands
might pass through frozen mist, chilling
and errie. The apparition took no notice
at all of the two men and their futile efforts
to aid the doomed victim.

The train rushed and rattled over the
rails as it sped on its journey, the passengers
in the lounge kept on reading, all unheeding
of what was transpiring outside. The engine
shrieked loudly as if the fiends of hell were
out on a spree.

Great gasping sobs began to whistle from
the throat of the big man and his eyes
started to protrude frightfully as the ghostly
struggle went on. His actions had already
slowed down to a helplessness, and the two
men with him there were impotent to aid.
The big man was slowly drawn to the back

coat came away in their hands. Over that
back rail this huge body of a man went,
still encompassed by the clinging octopus
of an apparition that once had borne the
semblance of a living person.
