WASHINGTON TRYS OUT COLORED GUIDE SIGNS WASHINGTON will be the first state to use colored signs to guide motorists through heavily-congested city areas, the State Highway Commis- sion having authorized the new signs on an experimental basis. If they prove successful, they will be installed state-wide. The new route markers will be used eventually on all U.S. numbered high- ways in Washington, but present plans are to install them first in Olympia and Seattle on U.S. 99 and in Spokane on U.S. 10. Four colors will be used to designate direction of travel. Going north through Seattle and Olympia, the motorist will follow orange signs; go- ing south he will follow green ones. When he is moving east through Spokane, he will follow brown signs, and when going west, the blue. The new markers will be the same size and shape as the ones now in use and will have the same number to designate the highway. The only difference will be the color. The new signs will be completely visible at night. Thousands of glass beads will be glued to the signs to reflect headlights. * * Play Safely—Drive Safely ... . . .
