JENNIFER MARKOWITZ THE MCGILL DAILY (MCGILL UNIVERSITY) MONTREAL (CUP) - “The men and women [in Afghanistan] are not liberated; they are living under the mask of democracy.’ That was the message - delivered to McGill on Sept. 12 by Malalai Joya, an activist for womens rights in Afghanistan and, at 27 years of age, the youngest member of the Afghan National Assembly, Just four months after Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared his intention to extend Canada's combat mission in Afghanistan by two years, Joya relayed a critical message: foreign troops in Afghanistan. have not generated any fundamental changes in the plight of the Afghan people, “Countries like the United States have their own policies and agenda in Afghanistan, and they don't think of the [Afghan] people and their suffering, Joya said. She stressed that Afghanistan desperately needs to tackle corruption and rebuild after years of violence, but said foreign troops will not be the ones to bring peace and stability. “Liberation is not money to be donated. Change must come from within; the independence must be our own, Joya said. To help the people of Afghanistan and to bring about positive changes, Joya said that Canada must act as an autonomous state, - Parliamentarian Brings Message of Peace rather than as a puppet implementing U.S. policies. Prior to speaking at McGill, Joya attended the federal convention in Quebec City, where party delegates overwhelmingly voted to send a message to the Conservative government that Canadian troops must be withdrawn from Afghanistan. Joya also spoke at the conference, supporting the party's sentiments. “We know the situation [in Afghanistan] is currently not working, but it was important for the NDP to listen to someone who has been elected to represent the people of Afghanistan and who i is actually witnessing the situation,’ said Karl Belanger, senior press secretary to NDP Leader Jack Layton, on Tuesday. At McGill, Joyas presentation on peace-building in Afghanistan aimed to get students behind the headlines and present them with a personal account of foreign involvement. “To see a woman like Joya in that situation of such influence is motivating for me, said student Sumayya Daghar. “She is the type of figure who makes me think that one day I will be able to speak up and make a difference.” Joya left students with this message: “Please don't forget the suffering. Please try to help and to become aware.
