Opinions _ Parking at the Northern Sport Centre Dear Students, As you may know, there have been concerns regarding the parking situation at the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre, or NSC. I am pleased to announce that after meeting with the Executive Committee of NSC, they have agreed to honour UNBC student parking permits in the seventy most eastern parking spots in the south- east parking lot, closest to University Way. There will be parking available to students with valid UNBC parking permits on a ‘first come-first serve’ basis; however, these are not just exclusive to students with valid parking permits. Should these parking spots be occupied, or if students wish to park anywhere else on NSC property, they will be required to purchase a ticket from a designated dispenser and park elsewhere. As NSC is not owned exclusively by UNBC; but rather is a partnership between the City of Prince George and the University, the compromise was necessary to ensure that all parties involved were satisfied. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me and I will help resolve any problems you might have. Though he is entitled to his opinion on the matter, it is important for me to give the facts - as his account of the deal hints of bullying, conspiracy, and corruption. It is true that CFUR is airing both home and away UNBC Timberwolves games. Why? It occurred to me that CFUR, in its roughly seven years on campus, has really failed to capture and foster a sense’ of campus pride - we’ve been rather isolated here in our little booth. I took it upon myself to do more for a campus that has provided us with free space for all this time without ever asking anything in return - and at the same time form a relationship with a new demography of students. As the Northern Sports Centre is built, and the Timberwolves finally have their own court, it seemed to me that getting CFUR involved in campus sport would be beneficial to both them and us. There has been vague talk about us sharing in a likely small amount of sponsorship money somehow - sometime in the future,. but no agreement concerning money has been made. Our priority is just getting the Timberwolves on the air. So, in November, I began negotiations to be the official broadcaster for the Timberwolves. Now, there is mention in Dan’s letter about set regulations for the proposal of new programming on CFUR. What he didn’t mention is the fact that those regulations apply only to volunteers who want to use our studio to produce their own radio show. The production of the Timberwolves broadcasts will be done at the Northern Sports Centre - we will only rebroadcast an internet stream originating there. When we decided to air Democracy Now! (an alternative news program out of New York) years ago, we didn’t ask host Amy Goodman to fill out a show proposal form either. For the record, there was unanimous support for the broadcast from EARS and the CFUR Programming Committee. Unfortunately, by the time we had all the details worked out, it was the beginning of the new semester. We had to rush things along, and free up space on the CFUR schedule in a couple of weeks. And that’s where the sort of disappointment Dan expressed finds its inspiration. Though, within a few days of the announcement, all four volunteer-hosted shows that had to be moved to accommodate the games were found new spots on the schedule (nothing had to be cancelled), there were some sour feelings about being forced to move at all. This frustration is understandable, but the simple truth is that the air times for those shows were a lot easier to change than the Timberwolves schedule, and we did what had to be done. I stand by my decision, though I regret not giving those volunteers affected more than two weeks notice. But it couldn’t be helped. In the meantime, we are proud to be able to do our part as a bridge between the students, UNBC Athletics, and Prince George. There are exciting times ahead for us all. This is the one thing that keeps me occupied while eating my breakfast at rez. This is because it didn’t matter if I bent the pages, or spilt my cereal on it, and it allows us to hear the voices from all sorts of students, whether it be Mitch talking about the latest concert, or some angry rant about politics, or even the head of the newspaper getting it from behind by Adolf. It is entertaining, and I don’t want to lose it. It’s not like we can just order the Globe and Mail to rez, mainly because we are students and would rather spend any extra money we have on anything else but more reading.
