articles washed with water. ‘There
was no visible trace of blood ever
having been on the samples. When
the reagent was applied, however,
not only did it show where the
blood had been originally spilled,
but it also gave positive results over
the entire area which had been cov-
ered by the wash water. The dilute
contamination of the washing water
had been sufficient to leave traces of
blood.

Another test that was made out in
the open proved interesting. Some
blood used in tests had been thrown
away on the open ground outside.
A week or more later, it was decided
to see if the earth would react to the
benzidene test. The experimenter
could not locate the exact spot where
the blood had been thrown away, so
he took a pinch of earth from a num-
ber of places over an area of ten or
twelve square feet. The pinches of
earth were placed in a test tube with
plain water, and shaken. The re-
agent was applied and in a few sec-
ends the characteristic blue green re-
action took place. This despite the
fact that the ground had been sub-
jected to several rainfalls.

The benzidene test is only one of
several. It is not a positive test be-
cause certain other substances will
also react to produce the blue-green
color. However, it is sufficiently spe-
cific to be a good indicator, suggest-
ing that the sample should be sub-
mitted to the laboratory if positive
indication is produced. Other and
more accurate tests will then deter-
mine positively whether the sub-
stance is blood, and whether it is
human. Likewise, the benzidene test
has great value as an eliminant. Sup-
posing a garment has a red stain and
the investigating officer must know
if the stain is blood or red paint. He
can tease a few fibres out of the gar-
ment, and test them with his benzi-
dene field kit. In a few moments he
will be able to determine if the stain
is not blood, or if it is likely to be
blood and worthy of further accur-
ate testing technique at the labora-
tory.

TESTS FOR BLoop

There are a number of reagents,
or indicators, used in the detection
of blood besides benzidene. Among
these there is the guaiac test, the
leuoco malachite green test, the
phenopthalein test and others. All
of these are preliminary tests, and
are not positive.

Confirmatory tests are usually
based on the reaction of the hemo-
globin. One of these tests is the
micro-spectroscopic test. A portion
of the suspected stain is dissolved in
physiological saline, and the sample

It is very likely that right now
Clinton and district residents are en-
joying the sight of seeing their two
young hockey teams display their
stuff on the new outdoor skating
rink, which Const. Smith said was
started in the summer time.

The officer said the government
donated four lots for this outdoor
rink, which will also serve as a
spring and summer and autumn en-
tertainment scene.
