The gathering took place at the Recreation Center in Cassiar, with the crowd resplen- dent in denim and polyester. The hall itself was bedecked in gentle shades of yellow, with the most contemporary of furnishings; all of which were given a special warmth under the pale, orange glow of candlelight. The first presentation took place shortly before 8:00 p.m. with the glib Greg Morgan presenting the Cassiar Senior Fastball Trophy to Molson’s Mauraders who were managed by Gary Stratton. This was the first time in many years that Cassiar had a Fastball League and a great deal of this year’s success was owed to the partici- pation of a number of high school students. The evening was then turned over to the Slowpitch League. It seems that this is the generation of sport fads. First there was the San Diego Chicken, followed by a host of imitators, then there was the “wave” and most recently “Rally Caps”. Well, not to be outdone, Cassiar started a fad of its own - “The P.J. Salute”. The problem was, how do you acknowledge the individual who created this sensation. After a great many hours spend in consultation at the local pub, the executive decided to name an award after him. So PJ. Connolly was presented with the first annual “P.J. Salute Award”. The next two trophies were given to two of the younger players in the league; with David Duke receiving the “Most Improved Player” trophy and Roland Rud- iven. the. ~Bapkic of the ee award. “Rookie of the Year” - Roland Rudkowsky Scott Smith received a mysterious gift from his “Rainbow Brite” fans, just prior to being given the M.V.P. trophy for Mill Maintenance. The other M.V.P. trophy winners were Claire McKiernan for the Sixty-Niners; Sonja Willits for the Masterbatters; Ethel Songhurst for the Firemen; Chris Molloy for the Students; Heather _ Joseph for Alex’s Army, Andre McCutcheon for Finning; Gerry Terreberry for the Sliders; and Clary Poitras for Happy PRIFRIPR PRASAD ferry Christmas Scott Smith receiving his two awards There were special awards given to acknowledge some of the people who helped make Slowpitch in Cassiar a success. The first going to Luc Prevost, who for two years has brought the equipment to the games and picked up after each game, rain or shine. The next special present- ation went to Gary Swift, without whose efforts the Annual Slowpitch Tournament would *be decidedly less enjoyable. He organizes and does most of the leg work . for the barbecue held during the tournament. The Sliders were honoured on their 10th Anniversary. They were given an award for Longevity, acknowledging them as the longest standing team in Cassiar. Then the Master Batters were given a Team Sportsmanship Award. For three years they struggled through without a victory, yet they probably had more fun than any other team in the league and argued the least. Gary Stratton was honoured as Coach of the Year, but it was uncertain as to whether he was honoured for managerial brillance or extreme patience. His Molsen’s Mauraders won it all in the Fastball League; but his Firemen won nariy at all. Finning was given individual trophies for being tournament finalist with the Tourna- ment Championship Trophy going to Alex’s Army for the second year in a row. Turning serious now, | would like to thank several people without whose help the Awards Banquet would not have gotten off the ground, let alone been the success it was. Heather Joseph and Greg Morgan who put in many hours organizing the dinner; Dave Tripp who organ- ized the bar and Danielle Bernard who spent most of the night being bartender, along with Gerry Terreberry. I would also like to thank all those who helped and were not acknowledged personally, and all those who partici-_ pated in both the league and the evening's festivities to make this past season the success it was. IT | Sew ear _ to everyone in Cassiar Country from the staff at CP AIR WATSON LAKE U E T Curlin ig I 'A Friend News The curling season is now in full swing after some early start-up problems. This year we have a strong em- phasis on junior curling and a family league. This is a really good opportunity for the whole family to partici- pate in a sporting event. We hope to set up some outside competition with juniors from Watson Lake. Junior cur- lers are the future of any strong club and we are very happy to see this enthusiasm. For many years we have been trying to qualify for a club license and finally we appear to be very close to meeting all the complicated requirements. For those of you who are wondering why we took a few feet away from the dance floor, we had to reduce our square footage to under 1200. The first bonspiel of the year was the Grey Cup bon- spiel and we will have all the results for the next issue. January is always the month of playdowns for the Brier and the Interdepartmental Bonspiel. Everyone will recall that last year four women from the Environmental Depart- ment proved they were the very best by defeating some assorted brothers-in-law. Not all family curling is done on Saturday afternoons! Come down to the curling club and sign up for the new draws. Remember. Participate, it’s fun. Gumnasties Melanie Wolfe, President This year there are nineteen children in gymnastics, ranging in age from 5 to 9 years. Teacher, Joan John, with the help of Ada Bennett, is really putting the kids through the hoops, concentrating mostly on tumbling and gross-motor co-ordination skills. Due to the rather young age of most of the children in gymnastics, the club won't be participating in the Northern B.C. Winter Games this year, but will be putting on a gymnastics display sometime in the new year. We meet Wednesdays at Snowridge School from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. THANK YOU To all the local merchants who so generously supported the ‘‘PICK-A-PRIZE" raffle ake on December 3rd, 1986: Coffe Mugs and Rack Nativity Figurines Perfume Stagecoach $40 Gift Certificate _ Wall Clock Baby Doll With Tub Calculator Case of Motor Oil Desk Set Case of Motor Oil Stop Watch Avon Cassiar Hair Design Cassiar Mining Corporation Clothes Closet Erickson Gold Erickson Gold Erickson Gold Finning Tractor Hwy 37 Jade City P & W Services 'YS.
