March 23, 1999 Many students may not be aware that UNBC has an active Alumni Association. This associa- tion exists to foster a con- tinuing relationship between UNBC gradu- ates and the University. They strive to keep in con- tact with UNBC gradu- ates, keeping them up-to- date with the direction in which the University is going, its goals, and to form a network of informa- tion and contacts for all TO REGISTER BY PHONE alumni. The Alumni Association has an elect- ed executive of 6 people who meet on a monthly basis to plan events, par- ticipate in University func- tions such as Convocation, student recruitment or University fundraising efforts, and just to keep in contact with everyone. Presently there are almost 700 UNBC alumni, some of whom have continued their edu- ‘cation at the graduate iT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT EASIER’ NEY s UNBC’s Alumni Association level, or have joined the work force in a very wide variety of careers. Three times a year a newsletter is produced and mailed to all UNBC graduates with news from the University and the Association. Numerous special events are held throughout the year. Most recently Lower- Mainland and Calgary chapters of the Association have been formed. A UNBC Alumni web site will soon be faunched with more details on the Association, including a Jobs Page link to UNBC Human fH ies) O WU) nieme. sh: Approximately 10 UNBC graduates have been hired by UNBC and at times hiring preference is given to graduates of the University. You may have noticed a large new dis- play case hanging on the wall in the first floor of the Library building near the classrooms. For those students graduating in May, information on the upcoming Convocation such as grad photos, parchment frames, etc will be available in the display case. The Annual! Alumni Association Reception will take place on the evening — before Convocation (Thursday, May 27) here schoo reece A DA on campus. All past grad- uates as well as new graduates and _ their guests are invited to this informal reception. Once a year, the Association presents three awards at the Reception. These awards are: Alumni of the Year An alumni of the University of Northern British Columbia who has achieved personal suc- cess and demonstrated admirable voluntary or professional public ser- vice within the university and/or community in a variety of areas including UNBC organizations, sports, the arts, business & politics. New Alumni of the Year A member of the current graduating class who has demonstrated remarkable characteristics as well as public service both inside the University and in the broader community. The recipient of this award will be someone who can be considered a model rep- resentative of the current year’s graduating class. Honorary Alumni Member A person or persons who have been involved with the, formation of the University or who have provided moral, financial or other support to UNBC and/or the Alumni Association of UNBC. This person could either be a member of the University Community, such as (but not limited to) a faculty or staff member or a member of the broad- er community of Northern BC such as (but not limit- ed to) a business person or a person of political stature. lf you are interested in nominating someone for these awards, contact Jennifer Hammond at 960-5620 or Claudette Gouger at 960-6426 to pick up a nomination form.
