2 ¢ 00 2900/5 32 $< iS Os M Lake, 2,222 feet, most of drop being in last 6 miles. The trail is through the Babine Range, a mountain system trending north-west 125 miles, 20 to 40 miles wide, with rugged, picturesque peaks, 7,000 to 9,000 feet, and frequent small glaciers, forming the watershed between Bulkley Valley and Babine Lake. Creeks and rivers head- ing in the range have steep gradient, so low level passes are uncommon, best being found in the southern extremity where the range flattens and merges into the Northern Interior Plateau. Distance from Hazelton to Fort Babine is about 70 miles. The trail is in fair condition for pack- horses. From Babine Lake it crosses easterly 34 miles, rising to 3,600 feet and gradually falling to Takla Lake, 2,268 feet, over fairly mountainous country of the low Frypan Range, not well defined, the apparent mountainous nature being partly due to Babine and Takla Lakes occupying valleys maturely eroded *into the northern extension of the Nechako Plateau country. The crossing on.Takla Lake is by ferry-scow operated by an Indian when the lake is fairly calm. At eastern shore is a store and trading-post where, Guring hunting season, horses and guides can be obtained. From Takla Lake the trail climbs to 3,400 feet on the mountain-slopes, and crosses down Kenny Creek to Tom Creek; then over a low summit to Silver Creek; thence over rolling country to the flat divide separating the headwaters of Nation and Omineca Rivers—the Arctic- Pacific Divide here being scarcely noticeable—to west end of Germansen Lake, then crossing over hills to Slate Creek and thence to Manson, about 65 miles from Takla Lake. The area between Takla Lake and Manson is more mountainous than country farther south, forming the transitional stage to mountainous country north of the plateau, a rolling area broken by short isolated hills, 1,000 to 2,000 feet above valley-levels. To north and west this broken country merges into more Prominent mountains on headwaters of Omineca and Nation, and in Babine Range farther west. [Printed in Canada.]
