Over the Edge + February 2, 2011 17 T-Wolves Bust a CAP Women’s basketball team rolling at the right time BROCK CAMPBELL SPORST EDITOR With provincials just one month away the women’s basketball team is gaining momentum just at the right time. After starting the season 3-3 the T-Wolves have strung together five wins in a row including two big victories over undefeated Capilano (CAP) February 21st and 22nd, giving UNBC an 8-3 record. In fact the T-Wolves made a huge statement in their Friday night game crushing the Blues 99-72 and following up that performance with an 83-74 win on Saturday. On opening night of their double-header with the Blues the T-Wolves were on fire to say the least. As a team UNBC shot fifty-eight percent from the field and the same from long distance going 7 for 12 from behind the arc. After the first quarter ended deadlocked at twenty-one the T-wolves punished the Blues in the second outscoring CAP 27-11. UNBC displayed a perfect inside/outside game, running their offence through posts, Sarah Moxley and Erin Beckett, who took advantage of CAP’s smaller frontcourt. Moxley put together a solid night showing off her superb inside passing while scoring fourteen and bringing down ten boards, and as for Beckett she tallied twelve points on six of ten shooting. On the perimeter the T-Wolves knocked down four threes in the second quarter alone giving UNBC a 48-32 lead heading into halftime. The Blues made a push for a comeback in the second half setting up a frantic full court press to start the third. Despite six quick points by CAP for the most part the T-Wolves were able to hold off the Blues pressure and preserve their lead. It was primarily UNBC’s hot shooting led by Jennifer Clyne that kept the T-wolves ahead. Clyne was nearly perfect for the game going seven for eight from the field including a hundred percent from downtown in a seventeen- point effort. Heading into the fourth the T-Wolves had an eighteen-point lead and continued to roll over the Blues. As the final minutes ticked down the home crowd sensed the T-Wolves may crack the century mark and cheered emphatically for UNBC to reach one hundred. But when the T- Wolves got the ball back with six seconds left sitting at ninety-nine, Jenn Knibbs respectfully dribbled out the clock. The T-Wolves shooting however did cool down on Saturday, but UNBC was able to grind out another victory. As a team they shot forty percent from the field and connected on only five of nineteen three-point attempts. Furthermore, the T-Wolves struggled to protect the ball, giving up the rock twenty-nine times leading to thirty-one Blues points off turnovers. UNBC’s defense in the first half was the difference in the game. The T-Wolves held the Blues to thirty points in the first twenty minutes and led by sixteen at halftime. Once again it was Moxley and Beckett going to work inside. Beckett finished the night with a double-double scoring fourteen and pulling down ten rebounds and Moxley racked up ten points and seven boards. As a team UNBC outrebounded CAP 55-36. The T-Wolves would extend their lead in the third going up by as much twenty; however, a couple of late runs by CAP gave the Blues some life. With less than four minutes to go CAP trailed by only seven, but a three pointer by Clyne that just beat the shot clock buzzer dashed UBC DAP The gateway to accounting Accelerate your future with the Diploma in Accounting Program (DAP) at the University of British Columbia. Clyne continued shooting well, once again going perfect from long distance and leading the T-wolves with fifteen points. Looking ahead at the T-Wolves remaining schedule, the women’s team has a good chance at winning seven more in a row to finish the season. UNBC meets up with Kwantlen who currently sit in eighth spot with a 2-8 record, followed by a matchup with sixth place Camosun. The T-Wolves then finish their home-and-home series with UBC-O in Kelowna, a team UNBC has already beat this season in a 65-58 victory. Finally UNBC ends the season at home against the worst team in the league with a 0-11 record, Columbia Bible College.
