April 6, 1999 SOUNDSCAPE Over The Edge Page 5 Topless girls, spit and guitars by Dan Shugar In the eighties, they were the undisputed gods of the glam metal arena. Come _ the nineties, where angst rock, lacking even the slightest scrap of musi- cal prowess, is the norm, Motely Crue siill manages to pack a punch. Motley Cure rocked the audience Friday, March 26th at the Prince George Multiplex. Kings Incorporated, a local Prince George band opened the show, with a short 4-song set, consisting of two heavy tunes, followed by two acoustically — inclined ballads. Next to plug in their guitars was Noise Therapy. The Vancouver foursome has opened for such bands as Marilyn Manson, Brother Cain and Filter. Noise Therapy hit the stage complete with banners, smoke machines, and spiky hair. Also adorning the stage was an inflatable sex toy, in the shape of a cow, which guitarist Kai Markus “played” with throughout the set. The band certainly did not disappoint when it came to stage presence. Too bad the crowd § was less excited than a tamed kitten. Markus tried fruitlessly to get the crowd on their feet. “Are you guys allowed to stand, or is that against the fucking rules around here?” After Noise Therapy had finished their set, we had about an hour wait before the Crue was set to hit the stage. The tension was thicker than the smoke from the many joints being passed around. All of a sudden, the lights dimmed and a profusion of smoke escaped from the sides of the stage, turning the metaphori- cal clock all the way back to 1987. Four leather clad men magi- cally appeared on stage to the delight of the thousands people who began hooting and hol- lering. In an instant, the formerly submissive mass metamorphosed into a true throng of metal heads. Vince Neil took the mike, wearing a leopard skin cowboy hat, and a hearing aid. The band looked just like they did in their hey- day, albeit without the big hair. In the final race Mike was in third place until the second to last kicker, “Il had been taking the straighter left kicker the entire time, but | liked the exotic right kicker” Mike explained in a slightly inebriated fashion. (Mike, his manager Adam Hoffar, and his trainer Tom Avery had consumed about 8 beers by the time | final- ly got to talk to them) To pass the second place finisher Mike tried another new move. He had always checked his speed over the last two humps, however, this time he kept going full speed and it panned out for him as he passed just before the finish line. Adam the manager, said “I got him his gin- gerale. The only other thing | could have done was gone out and clubbed the other guy for him. So | prayed.” Kevin Cathers, another UNBC student finished in third place. Mike has been snow- boarding for six years. Before coming to UNBC he taught snowboarding at Mount Washington for four years. He has been known to take entire semesters off to go snowboarding. tn fact one winter he lived in a 12-foot trailer with 3 other people and a dog, just so he could go snowboarding. The prize for first place was a $600 Option snowboard (with a cari- bou on it) donated from Ruins board shop. In the off-season Mike wake boards, golfs, and does hand exercises to keep his wrists strong. He claims he will be back next year to defend his title.
