C’s Attorney General BRITISH COLUMBIA has always been noted for its fighting political figures. Old- timers delight in going back in memory to the frontier days, when this province was a brawling aggregation of loggers, miners and mighty hard drinkers, and recounting the deeds of the men who occupied govern- ment seats during those hectic times. But, the most colourful, most courageous and certainly the most human of the entire group is the man who today directs the legal machinations of British Columbia— Hon. Royal Lethington Maitland, attorney- general. Pat Maitland stands out among today’s crop of legislators with all the colour of a rainbow in a darkened sky. This slim, fair-haired, steely-eyed fighting Irishman will undoubtedly make political history before British Columbia or before even Canada hears the last of him. During his political career Pat has made many friends and he has also made a number Hon. R. L. Maitland of enemies. Like many public figures, he worries nothing about his enemies but must at various times ask protection from his friends—for a man’s friends can be very annoying and the man who does not make enemies makes little of anything in his life. There is a fine streak of humour in Pat Maitland which will serve him in good stead as he climbs the rocky pathway to fame. An accomplished orator he can think fast on his feet and can always be relied upon to deliver either an anecdote with a knock- out punch line, or a tender message of sympathy if the occasion demands such. In his present post as head of the Provin- cial Police this guardian of British Columbia should do exceedingly well. He has a warm spot in his heart for the Police and he is determined to make that body of finest of its kind on this continent. He will do that, too. Pat takes nobody’s word for any He must find out for himself and betide the person who tries to act as “stoo pigeon” to this trigger-minded Irishm He can be merciless as a prairie h storm but never for a moment wilF he disregard justice and equity. The most | humble citizen of this province is cate just as great a welcome in the Atto . General’s office as would be accorde leading figure in the Dominion. ne He has high ideals. He has vision and foresight but is big enough to give stri attention to every side of every questio and there need not be any fear that Maitland will use his position of autho to “throw his weight” around. The Provincial Police of this province — will find in him a ready champion. © capable body of men will develop an e greater efficiency under his inspiring lea ship and enthusiastic guidance. Mr. Maitland was born on Jame 1889, in Ingersoll, Ontario. He was created a K.C. in 1928 but before that held the office of city prosecutor in Vancouver f: 1915 to 1919. He is particularly proud his son, Bill Maitland, who has rec numerous decorations for his bravery seas and is known as one of Canada’s m a intrepid aviators. But Pat himself has accumulatedas y honours and the best part of his care still ahead. He means much to Br Columbia. 33 A soldier can't get along without water. ‘ k War Savings Stamps will buy a water bottle. McCALL BROS.
