“The next best feed is at Rasmus- sens, about sixteen miles south, and from there it is another eighteen miles to Blackwater, where you will find good bunch grass and another telegraph station. From Blackwater it is forty-four miles to Quesnel, but the ferry only crosses the river during the day time—that is until around seven p.m.” replied Smith. There was a pause whilst the rider considered these remarks, then finally he said very slowly, “I had best be getting along.” The rider had made no attempt to dismount, and kept his left side to Smith, notwithstanding both horses attempted to graze whilst the men were talking. “Well, just a minute,’ exclaimed Smith, “I have just lost my saddle mare with loco weed, and I see you have a spare saddle horse with you, will you sell it to me? If if you don’t wish to sell the spare horse will you sell me the one you are riding? I simply have to have a saddle horse out here for my line work.” “No,” said the stranger, “I would not sell you the sorrel, but if the price is right I might sell you this roan, as I will not require two horses after I reach Quesnel anyway.” Smith looked carefully over the horse the man was riding, and finally made him an offer for it, saying that he was not particular about the saddle as he had a good saddle anyway. The man said, “You will have to take the saddle anyway; I will throw the saddle in, it is not much of a saddle anyway; yes, you can have this roan.” The traveler now dismounted, and once again Smith had the idea that he was trying to keep his right side away from him. Bill of Sale Refused Smith went into the station, and brought out sufficient cash to pay for the horse, also he brought out a small scribbling pad and asked the man to give him a bill of sale, which was quite a customary procedure in horse deals, even on the trail. The owner, however, was adament and re- fused to give a bill of sale, stating that the transaction was so small that there was no necessity. This aroused Smith’s suspicions, and he took a thorough look at the man who was still busily engaged in fastening the gunny sack across the sorrel. He was able to get a good look at the man now, and he noted two unusual things. The right hand of the man was enclosed in a grey suede glove, which gave Smith the impression that the hand was an artificial one; also hanging from his belt on the same side was a formidable Luger pistol—a most unusual weapon to be carried in the woods in those days. Something now clicked in Smith’s brain. He knew he had never seen this man before—or had he? some- thing seemed familiar about him. Anybody could tell at a glance that he was different in many ways from the usual men who passed up and down over the trail, apart from his apparent deformity. He acted in a taciturn manner, and as if he had something to hide. There was no “hail fellow well met” about him. Suddenly Smith’s brain clicked, and he was a very frightened man.
