to its former glory, but it was im possible. Because they were a little nation between two huge nat- ions, there were always intrigues and tribute money to pay. The people longed for the King that had been promised to deliver them and bring them new hope. They said, "Where is the God of justice?". A prophet, whose name was Malachi, heard their murmerings, but he warned them that their King would not be as they expected: "Suddenly the Lord whom you seek will come....Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand firm when he appears? He is like a re- finer's fire, like fuller's soap.... refining and puri fying''. (3: 1-3) The answer to their hope was much more than they had asked. They looked for a Lord who would end their troubles, but the coming One was the Lord indeed, and as Lord they must meet him. He comes not to play favorites on their terms but rather, to bring peace through judgment, to deal not only with the sins of their enemies, but with their sins. Could they stand his coming? Can we stand his coming? Jesus also looks for child- This like faith and trust in adults. simple beauty is the joy to which we look forward at Christmas. May God bless you in this Season, Rev.
