gained his sergeant’s stripes. He left
the Force After being in it a decade.

A few weeks ago I had tea with him
and his wife Pat in the amazing and
beautiful old house they have bought
at Curtis Point, Vancouver Island. It
overlooks the waters of Canoe Cove,
peaceful anchorage for dozens of
yachts and power boats.

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce had just re-
turned from Hollywood, where Guy
is known as one of the foremost make-
up artists for the movies and Pat an
authority on wigs and head dresses.
Their reputation was earned not only

don with those studios as well as with
Sir Alexander Korda. And though
they are, they insist, “retired,” only
last year when they were holidaying
in Switzerland, M.G.M. tried to in-
veigle them to Italy to work on Quo
Vadis.

“We might have gone,” they told
me, “had we not just bought Journey’s
End—that’s the name we have given
this place—and were anxious to get
back to work on it.”

“But how,” I asked Guy, looking
at a painting of him in uniform, look-
ing very fine in red coat, chevrons and
slouch hat which hangs in the living-
room at Journey’s End, “how did you
get to be a make-up artist from a
Mountie?”

He laughed. “In a way it was a
