POLICE CHIEF JOHN BLACKSTOCK 180 pounds, all muscle, distributed over his six-foot-two-inch frame. He kept himself in shape, and was able to go hunting all his day off and work. all night, without turning a hair. In recent years (he is 47 now) he has added something to his girth and weight, but he can still sling a quarter of a moose, weighing 130 or 140 pounds over his back and carry it several miles. Liking For Sport Last year he cultivated two gardens at once—at his home on Hillside Avenue and at an allotment on Vista Heights. He got some help from his 16-year-old daughter, Margaret. Besides hunting, fishing and gar- dening, he has in the past spent much time breeding pigeons and canaries. The pigeons were the racing kind. He gave them up because it seemed that he was always being called to duty just at the time his pigeons were coming home and he arrived too late to clock in a winner. His current hobby is raising love- birds. At present he has five pairs. The sight of a two-ounce budgerigar Dominion Hotel Wm. J. Clark, Manager Victoria, B.C. He was born August 12, 1907, at a house near Mount Tolmie, the eldest of five. His father, James Blackstock, a Boer War veteran, was farming at that time, but he subsequently moved into town, to a place on Howard Street, and worked for the city. John Blackstock delivered milk night and morning, and handled two paper routes—one full-time and the other as a relief carrier. Often he had the milk route and the two paper routes to do on the same day. His First Job His first job, after leaving school, was picking tomatoes in a green- house. Then he was apprenticed as a plumber to the firm of Hayward & Dodds. A man who worked with him then says he was bright and quick to assimilate what he was told, but “too big to make a plumber.” He just couldn’t fit himself under a sink. Furthermore, trade slackened off, and plumbers were getting only odd days’ work. John Blackstock left to : Compliments of RADIO APPLIANCE CO. * 783 Fort St. Victoria, B.C.
