February 21, 2000 Kingfish by Michelle Dubuc This last week the Generator was treated to the presence of the Kingfish, an upstart alternative rock band out of Terrace. We've all been to the Generator and seen some talented and not so talented musicians there, but for the most part a cover band is a cover band. But the Kingfish have something that indi- cates they are going to be much more than that. A shame that they could only sing a couple of their original numbers, their self-titled demo CD has an impressive sound, heavy on the rock SOUNDSCAPE meter but maintaining origi- nality, keeping the band from blending in with the masses of post-grunge crap. And when they were singing cov- ers, they did it with style. Keeping away from the Britney Spears-Sugar Ray- Smash Mouth slop usually served up by cover bands, the Kingfish treated us to Wide Mouth Mason, Beck, and of course the Hip. The members of Stereophonics were gracious enough to hon- our the humble Genny with their presence Friday night, and ended up singing a song onstage with Kingfish. ee < . 3” Ma ry Stereophonics was so impressed with the band they were given backstage passes to Saturday night's OLP show at the Multiplex. The OLP openers came back Saturday night, and the drummer Stuart Cable played two songs with Kingfish, one of them being New Orleans is Sinking, and the Welsh drum- mer even knew the words! Kingfish are undoubtedly one of the more talented acts to come to the Generator, and hopefully they come back soon. Until then... “Hit me baby one more time”...ugh. Just answer this skill testing question: What is:the name of the band MORPHINE: ‘wallet size. Page 9 them. —
