March 20, 2000 Over The Edae Page 8 Jet Set Satellite Blueprint “ Nettwork Hailed as one of “Winnipeg’s Best Kept Bellaclava Limblifter/Universal They’re Baaack... Limblifter returns to the world And everyone thought elec- tronica was dead. In its purest form, the great elec- tronica experiment lives on thanks to Khan, or Can Oral, if you opt for the full length name. We think Khan sounds the best so that’s what were gonna stick with. Khan has literally made hundreds of records and has the influences to compliment them. There is hardly an electronic scene which Khan has not broken into yet. He operates three record labels independently, including the dance-floor-compatible Super-8 Records, El Turbo Loco (This is Khan’s personal experimental label. He Secrets” for a long time, Jet Set Satellite is now sporting a top 20 debut “Best Way to Die” on the airwaves and spin charts across the country. In 1998, Jet Set signed to the influential Nettwork label, based out of Vancouver (Sarah McLachlan, Skinny Puppy), almost by accident. The band was originally a duo made up of Trevor Tuminski and Dave Swiecicki, who had carved out their experience writing advertis- ing copy for radio stations and working in basement stu- dios. They also played in a small Winnipeg indie band of the living with Bellaclava, for the first time on the bands own Limblifter Records label. The Dahle brothers are responsible for the side- stream rock sound which Limblifter is known for bring- ing to the world. They former- ly formed Age Of Electric, which spawned the number one hit “Remote Control’ on their final album’ “Make a Pest a Pet.” Bellaclava is the product of over 100 days in the renown Vancouver recording studio The Factory. Ryan Dahle (Guitar/Vocals/Songwriter) claims that it specializes in “Music nobody needs.), and the DJ Label Temple Records. He also runs NY’s influential record store Temple Records - Coincidence...? The compilations which Khan has produced in the past include those done under the H.E.A.D. label, which is Khan and Kerosene playing round with noice and radios in Khan’s Brooklyn kitchen. Khan claims that the only audience of this label was the cockroaches until the music became popular in 1994 on the UK ambient scene. PSI-Project was Khan's first band, started in called Far Gone. Once the Nettwork deal was signed, Tuminski and Swiecicki were packed off to Montreal to join up with producer Michel Pepin, early on in 1999. The result was a complete turnaround for the band anda serious double take for Nettwork, who didn’t have especially high expectations for this band. The formerly acoustic duo had plugged themselves in and written a bunch of “crunchy electric guitar tunes,” which included the “Best Way to Die” hit. The reason for the success, claims Maniatis - Nettwork sums up the making of Bellaclava in one comment, “This record seemed to have a will of its own. It was like 13 angry wild coyotes all howling at the same time from differ- ent mountaintops; we had to climb up, catch each one and put them together.” The result is an aggressive mixture of guitar and background vocals triggering feelings of irony and contradictions. The Dahle’s have always been obsessed with “combining unlike parts to create some- thing more complicated and unusual; _uplifting/vengeful, 1988 - it was revived in 1997for the bands reunion. They never got a deal until their Matador deal in late 1999. Mass-Turbator only released one 12” which apparently went straight to the top of the DMC charts hit- ting #1 in 1993. As mentioned earlier, Khan's music is pure experi- mental electronica - its the creative lo-fi noise which one can guarantee that they have never heard the like of before. Khan is hardly a newcomer to the electronica scene. He has spun extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and of course New York. A&R VP, is due to hard work- unusual for young, relatively green musicians. Jet Set Satellite has now signed a management deal _ with Nettwork, happy with the commitment which the label has to its artists. In the words of Tuminski, “They're not like one of the bigger labels that throw a bunch of stuff at the wall just to see what sticks.” Jet set still needs to work on finding the rest of itself by working up to the five piece which suits them so well. For the most part on Blueprint, sessionals filled the void which Tuminski and Swiecicki heavy/happy, angry/mellow, etc.” The difficulty only lies in making sense of the result sometimes, given the inher- ent abstractness of Limblifter’s sonic origins. That isn’t to say that nobody appreciates the nature of Limblifters music - in fact quite the opposite. The sidestream sounds found on Bellaclava is joined by talent such as Holly McNarland, Corrine “Coco*—Culbertson, and Doug Elliott (Odds). In Ryan’s own words, Limblifters “standards have changed and we needed to Throughout his years gaining experience, he has also become a respected member of the international DJ scene - almost unparalleled in his creativity and able to make a funky beat from any sounds which find their way to his ears. Passport is sort of a “Best Of” CD for Khan, most of which has been out of print for a long time, unavailable in the US, or simply not avail- able on CD until now. If your looking to listen to a sample of the underground side- stream which makes the mainstream, Khan is the place to start. -Kevin Milos left behind. Although recently 20 year old Jeff Tetrault has been recently recruited as drummer, the band has yet to find a full-time bassist and guitarist. Even with session- als for recording, the result of Jet Set’s hard work is phe- nomenal. Soft but assertive backgrounds and_ intense vocals make for a cult disc which shouldn’t be missed. The only question we have is...When are they coming to Prince George? -Kevin Milos learn how to live up to them. We needed to hear some- thing we had not heard before.” Bellaclava is the result, and being a little off centre works to their advan- tage with the unique variety of sounds which they employ.
