Every carelessly tossed snowball is a herald, every ear full of slush one receives from some assholes “carelessly tossed “ herald is a cold, wet reminder... Meteorologists and astrologers are in agreement, the planets are in line. Psychics and arthritics can feel it, on days when a certain huge unbe endowment contributor is not releasing tones of smelly crap into the air you can actually smell the snow coming. With every flake that cascades gently from the heavens we are being hurled at high velocity into the kind of ski season legends are made of. The kind of ski season that justifies taking a week or two off of school for, the kind of ski season worth blowing your student loan on. The kind of ski season that will renew your faith in god and leave you dickering with the devil for more. Those of you new to the promised land (you know who you are _ former Vancouverites) can add skiing to your (already lengthy ) list of cool things to do in Prince George. It is for you that we present the following review of local down hill ski facilities. Tabor Mountain -not actually a mountain in the traditional alpine sense, more like a big hill really, tabor is great because it is only fifteen minutes away. -night skiing, t-bar, triple chair, nice lodge, and a ski jump. -cheapest of the local hills. -not overly aggressive groomed runs. Purden Ski Village -further away (1-hr) and a little more expensive then Tabor, but it is bigger. ‘weekend. BIG SNOW COME! Don’t have a trap line? Can’t bring yourself to go ice-fishing? Well then break-out the boards and hit the slopes. -Purden has some really cool runs and a couple of pretty laid back ones as well. -runs are groomed but sometimes you can get some nice powder snow. -nice lodge, try and hook- up with someone with a cabin out their so you can ski all -Purden has a dinky little t- bar that goes nowhere, and a double chair which makes for some long lines at the bottom. -apparently purden has been renovating, there are rumors about new runs and even another chair I can’t say if those will be ready this season or not (if you can shed some light let us know). by Karin Fennell A major winter sport in Prince George is skiing; both downhill and cross- country are easily accessible. - There are some excellent places for cross-country skiing here, like Cottonwood Island Park, Forests for the World, Otway, Tabor Mountain and even right around the campus. For downhill skiing enthusiasts PG has quite a selection of hills. For day trips try the Hart Highland, Tabor Mountain or-Purden Lake. A little further out of Prince George is Murray Ridge (Fort St. James) and Troll Resort (Quesnel). If you want to make it a weekend trip, try Powder King, Marmot Basin (Jasper), Hudson’s Bay Mountain (Smithers), or even Sun Peaks or Silverstar (near Kamloops). There is also a wide variety of ski clubs to join. The Otway Ski Club has cross-country trails that it regularly maintains, as well as the Nordic Ski Club. Powder King If you’re more of a downhill fanatic, the local Prince George Nancy Green Ski Club is one of the -not really local (a 2-hr.+ —_ largest branches in Canada. drive). So, no matter how you choose to defy death with 2x4’s strapped to your feet, there are mar; “Ly clubs -it is powder king, tons and tons of snow. -a couple of groomed runs, and lots of bush skiing. -I hate the new lodge, the old “Chateau Atco” was dark and wet but it had way more room. with lots of comacosie skiers to join you out in this winter wonderland of skiing.
