shortly after the robbery, also that she was intending to leave Prince George. Several days of intensive investigation seemed to leave a blank wall before the yes of the police; the only chink in which a case could be successfully prosecuted against LaRue was by entrapping him with some of the money and obtaining a con- fession—all evidence thus far being purely circumstantial. After some discussion with Inspector Parsons, Wheatley decided to leave for McBride accompanied by Staff- Sergt. McNeil and Investigator Gibb, there to obtain a warrant and search the rooms occupied by LaRue. In the absence of Capt. Wheatley on his visit to Prince George, the employees at McBride station had thought up a plan to test LaRue’s inquisitiveness. Due to the suspicion that LaRue had obtained the com- bination of the safe by reading the reversed copy of the carbon used by Herb Ludgate in the typing of the changed safe tumblers, they typed a copy of a fictitious letter from Capt. Wheatley to his superiors using a new sheet of carbon. The spurious copy purported to show that Wheatley suspected Ludgate of stealing the money and hiding it, using the excuse that the money had been stolen in his absence from the office. The carbon was left on a desk in the office in such a manner that LaRue would notice it, and upon touching or moving it would leave evidence that it had been examined. They then left for lunch leaving LaRue alone in the office. Questioning the janitor, who had no knowledge of the trap, about the disappear- ance of the carbon, he made a gratifying statement. “No, sir, I didn’t move anything here. But I saw LaRue come in here, while you were out to lunch. He picked up a piece of carbon paper and was holding it up to the light as if to read it.” “Did he say anything about it.” “Yes, he did. He said “That’s good. That's fine.” I asked him what was “fine,” and he crushed the carbon paper up and put it in his pocket and said, “It’s none of your damn business.” I don’t know what he was so huffy about.” With Compliments BRITISH COLUMBIA Third Avenue The Golden Pheasant Cafe OPEN DAY AND NIGHT “We Serve Only the Best’ ICE CREAM AND FOUNTAIN SERVICE Cigars, Cigarettes, Tobaccos and Soft Drinks Prince George, B.
