around a closed door. Angry voices
rose within the.room as police came
hurrying to the scene.

“Stay where you are, Curry, or I'll
shoot.” These words were heard by
everyone. There was a barely per-
ceptible pause, then a single shot
rang out. The police shouldered the
door, but it didn’t budge. They
crashed against it again, this time, the
catch gave away and they burst into
the room. One man lay on the floor,
quite dead, the other stood over him
with a gun.

* * * * *

That’s how the police found hin,
standing groggily over the dead man,
with a smoking pistol in his hand.
Now he was in prison, waiting to die
for killing Arnold Curry. He stirred
restlessly as the early-morning sun-
shine streamed in through the barred
cell window. He was muttering to
himself, his arms moving at his sides
in weird rythmic motions, disturbing
shafts of sunlight and forming huge
grotesque running figures on the bare
walls. A thought crept into his sleep-
filled brain, then he sat up slowly, his
eyes stared, glassy and veiled. Night
after night he had lain awake through
interminable darkness, his body rigid
with fear, tormented by a thought
which surged tumultuously in his
mind.

“Somehow, it didn’t seem possible
that he could have killed Arnold
Curry, yet, upon reviewing the facts,
it didn’t seem possible that he had
not.”

He remembered Curry’s eyes, as he
had last seen them, still in death, re-
flecting a look of blank unbelief. A
crowd had gathered quickly outside
the door, with police trying to keep
them back. Police, pressmen and
photographers had swarmed all
around while the preliminary in-
vestigation took place. Just before he
