It was here that Boone Helm was arrested

the card-playing gambler in the back,
and then, in his usual fashion, dared
anyone else to make a move until he
made his getaway.

The Salmon River country of Idaho
was now too hot for Boone Helm.
But there was still one fresh and un-
tried field open to him—British Co-
lumbia. There were stories of miners
making fabulous strikes in the Cari-
boo in B.C.’s interior. The ’48’ers had
worked their way up through the
Fraser River canyons, and the further
they went the better their luck. It was
rumored that “Cariboo” Cameron
had brought out two mule loads of
gold. Whatever the extent of his for-
tune, there was no doubt that he was
busy buying champagne for everyone
in Victoria who could help him drink
it. ‘hey said that even his horse drank
it! Drunken miners spilt a lot of gold
dust in the sawdust of Victoria’s
saloons, and small boys retrieved it on
a concession basis.
