It's a bal- ance between the professors (who can be hell), the homework (which can be convoluted), the social life (which you can have if you're lucky), and the final marks (which can be panic-inducing). We go from classroom sizes of only 30 students into the halls of a student campus bolstering with 4,000 students - How can we relate? How can we func- tion while achieving what is expected of us? The answers are not always in front of us, and this is what is different from high school now. To begin with, our university library is the perfect place to learn how to search academic journals and find information you never thought you would ever be able to access. It's a database with the nicest women, free staplers, a relatively cheap printer, and a couple dozen computers at your access to answer questions and complete assignments. The library at UNBC is vastly under-used, however, as many first year stu- dents are not only lacking the essential skills that should be taught to EVERY student entering the campus, but they often misuse the technology available and are docked marks on their assignments because of it. Sure, beginner courses are offered for credits and consist of librarians and one professor teaching you how to use the databases with nearly one-on-one help, and again, librarians are available briefly to help you find the specifics available for general assign- ments, but where is the real help? Too often I see even third year students enter the library for the first time simply incapable of using these resources to their advantage with full instructions and knowledge. The printing of assignments is even slightly confusing, and the cashiers who wish you to pay a fee on your account are downright snarly about the entire ordeal. Our Library needs some direction “Four dollars please?” “Hahaha, no, five dollars!” “But I only need - “ “Listen, you're wasting my time.” This is an actual conversation I have seen in front of me while standing in line to pay student fees. The process is neither friendly nor informative, and the only saving grace are the librarians readily available to help you use the printers for the first time, whether cash or account credit. Why isn't there a dedicated, free, one-hour course for students that can assist them with the MOST essential tool of their entire university careers? The library website has that nifty “Ask A Librarian” chat box (during certain hours), however there is only so much you can explain during a text-to-text chat conversation! What UNBC needs is a dedicated course for students of all years and ages to have a step-by-step instruction, as well as an FAQ period run by librarians or knowledgeable professors that would be able to assist students in their academic search-and-destroy needs. It shouldn't take a full three-credit course, and it shouldn't be a public memo. Other universities such as UBC or University of Victoria already have these optional programs that assist students, and UNBC needs them as well. Let's get on it, and let's get our research done properly! Ay
