So the loving couple traveled
around again for a couple of months
until they arrived at Herne Bay, 12
miles from Margate, on England’s
southeast coast.

Here Smith rented a house, and
just to get things shipshape, suggested
that his wife make a will, leaving him
everything she had. And just to show
that everything was on the level, he
made a similar will in his wife’s
favor.

For Smith by now had a plan work-
ing in his mind—a faultless plan to
get rid of Miss Mundy.

The groundwork he laid the day
after they arrived at Herne Bay.

Murder in the Bathtub

Mrs. Williams, it seems, was not
feeling very well.

Whether Smith suggested she didn’t
look well, or what it was we don’t
know. Anyway the solicituous Smith
took her round to Dr. French. The
doctor didn’t see anything greatly the
matter with her. A trifle out of sorts,
nothing serious. The weather might
account for it, it was oppressively hot
for a day or two.

That night the slightly feverish
woman decides to take a bath, and in
a few minutes, without a struggle, she
drowns in the bath.

Smith, without draining the water,
dashes round the corner for Doctor
French and on their return the pair
take the dead woman out of the tub.

Of course there’s an inquest, attend-
ed by Smith, the bereaved husband,
who is speechless with grief. And the
jury come to the verdict that Mrs.
Henry Williams came to her death
because “while taking a bath she had
an epileptic seizure, causing her to
fall back into the water and be
drowned thus, the said deceased died
from misadventure.”

Within 24 hours Smith was working
on the lawyers and in due course got
all Miss Mundy’s money.

Her relatives in Bristol were natur-
ally startled at the quick demise of
the young woman, but there was the
inquest. The matter had been probed
and found accidental.

Somehow Smith couldn’t get Edith
Pegler out of his mind; so he con-
tacted her, and they resumed house-
keeping at Margate. It’s curious how
Edith seems to have been ready to
resume life with Smith whenever he
walked in the front door.

But again he’s back at his old tricks
—these long business trips that keep
him away for months.

This time it’s Alice Burnham. He
had spotted her in church one Sun-
day at Southsea. What on earth Smith
was doing in a church one’ll never
know.

Alice was 25, good looking and com-
panion to an elderly invalid. And
besides she had $700 in the bank.

Once the ice was broken it was the
same old story: She was engaged on
October 15 and married him at Ports-
mouth on November 4. Smith married
under his correct name this time.

Although Smith didn’t know it,
there was one flaw in his performance
this time. Usually he studiously
avoided meeting the relatives of his
brides or any of their friends.

This time he visited the Burnham
home, and met Alice’s father. The old
man sized Smith us, and didn’t like
what he saw.

On December 10, Mr. and Mrs.
Smith went looking for rooms in
