TWELFTH EDITION where they sat in to a wholesome meal, nicely served. “Nothing like hot soup on a cold night,” remarked the woman, after serving her guests and Slim. “We always have it. Slim likes it: so does Dave.” “And how do things look these days in the big cities south? Picture shows, dances, speak-easies, all going full-swing, same as ever I'll bet. Nothing short of an earth- quake can stop these.” “Oh, some of the old joints have had to put up the shutters,” replied Greene, “since you were down there. But there are always penty, of new hotcha spots to make up for these.” YEARNING FOR City LIFE “Boy—if only I were in the city now,” commented Jean Protheroe longingly, “I'd just laugh, and laugh, and dance, and dance, and dine and drink wisely, but very, very well. “Sometimes, up here, I feel as if I want to jump up and scream, and run out into the snow, and run, and run, and keep on running until I drop—dead. Of course I know that is just the ‘Mad Coughborough’ in me. “Then I put on the gramophone, or listen to the radio, and Slim and I dance, some- times with Dave sitting by, glum and smok- ing, and reading. Oh dear, but we do have fun — I don’t think,” she went on, more and more sarcastically. “Then we slouch off to bed about eight-thirty, or eight o'clock, sometimes even seven, to be enter- tained by Dave with his usual snoring, sawmill concert.” Jean Protheroe was fully conscious of the impression she was making, particularly on young Greene. Even Dalgleish acknowl- edged misogynist that he was, could not withhold his eyes from the pale beauty of the woman’s finely arched neck and her shapely bared arms. Her jet-black hair was neatly brushed back, creating a siren-type of loveliness that is irresistible to most men. “Tf it weren’t for Slim,” she went on, “Td go positively nuts, and maybe crack old Dave over the skull with a broomstick.” She smiled at the thought of it. “You police officers know how these things hap- pen. So you really have Slim to thank for saving you a lot of trouble taking a goofy dame out. Eh, Slim—old bean!” Jean made a sad mouth at him. ‘Just the same, boys, you know as well as I do that lots of women up North do go batty every year.” “Yep! Never said a truer thing,” com- mented the sergeant. “Two years ago Sol Larsen’s wife flew off the handle—went clean daft—after five years of it. We took her in, strapped to a sled, shrieking at the first snowfall, cursing it and telling it to get back where it belonged, because it had come two weeks sooner than it was due, and winter was long enough without a trick like that.” “Of course,” returned Jean Protheroe, “women up here know the very day the snow is due, for it means seven months be- fore they Il see a blade of grass. Many a time I have thanked God for the Indian in me. sible.” “But you don’t really like it up here, Mrs Protheroe?” commented young Greene. “Why, sure I like it! But I guess I’m the same as other women. Never contented! When I’ve been up here for a while I want to be down there. I like it down there and then I get crazy for the bush.” She waved the matter off with her hand lightly. “Of course, constable, you are still rather wet behind the ears and maybe don’t under- stand that phase in a woman’s make-up.” It was said to ruffle Greene. “But Ill bet otter skins to muskrats,” she added, “that the sergeant there knows all about it. Allow him for an old sourdough when it comes to women.” She smiled knowingly at Dal- gleish, well aware how little women as such worried him. “The sergeant doesn’t know a thing about women, Jean,” replied Dalgleish, “except It helps me bear it.
