After a careful search of the premises nothing was found. Investigator Wheatley wired to the bank in Winnipeg for the serial numbers of the bills and in close consultation with Const. Service continued with the investigation: It was decided to leave Francis LaRue, the only possible suspect, until all other men at the station had been questioned. It was also decided to take it for granted that Herb Ludgate had placed the money pack- age in the safe, although in his highly ner- vous condition over his responsibility in the case, it was difficult to be certain. He re- membered only signing for it and placing it in the little satchel, which as far as he re- called was hung on the express truck which an unknown person had helped him push across the station platform. ~ Assuming he had placed it safely in the vault, there were only two other men, Mr. Davidson, the roadmaster, and Mr. Pedlar, a telegraph operator, who were in the office by the safe during the 20 minutes in which Ludgate was busy in the baggage room. Davidson and Pedlar were of unquestion- able honesty which left little chance that the money could have been stolen at that time. With little or no evidence to follow, Wheatley chanced to hear Henderson, the agent, say that he had been a telegraph operator at one time. With that knowledge in mind he asked Henderson to copy down any suspicious messages that might be sent through the operators, keeping his observa- tions to himself. Later that day Henderson handed the officers a copy of a message addressed to Francis LaRue. It read: “SORRY CAN- NOT DO AS INSTRUCTED. AM WRITING. WITHHOLD PACKAGE FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTION. AD- VISE AGAINST.” (Signed) LR. Irwin, Calgary. In consultation with Wheatley, Const. Sam Service told of his warning to Lucille Blain, lady of easy virtue with whom Francis LaRue was known to be consorting, also that she had been in town on the day in which the money had been brought in, and that she had left for Prince George the morning of its disappearance. It was decided to wire Inspector MacLeod, C.N. investigator in Calgary, to find out the nature of the package mentioned in the message to LaRue, while Const. Service sent a message to Staff-Sergt. A. McNeil in charge of Provincial Police in Prince George, asking him to search the premises of Lucille Blain under suspicion of retain- ing narcotics. The latter action due to the fact that LaRue had taken the opportunity of his lay-over period to board the train for Prince George and could have taken the money in question with him, possibly leav- ing it in the custody of the girl. That night Investigator Wheatley found the discomfort of his lodgings too much for his desire for rest. He decided to face the sub-zero weather and sit around the depet waiting room rather than bear the bitter cold of the only rooms available. Fitfully he SILVER TIP CAFE DER.
