On behalf of the entire OTE staff I than you for your tremendous support in 2009 and wish a happ December to you and yours. of you who did not This Month in Northern BC History ANDREW BAILEY EDITOR IN CHIEF On December 11 1911, Grand Trunk Pacific president Charles Hays wrote an inter- nal letter explaining his reasoning for naming the town at the junction of the Fraser and enjoy it while it lasts. Nechako rivers Prince George. By 1914, the town’s official name would be registered as Prince George. Although some historians attribute the naming of Prince George to be associated with the youngest brother of King George VI and the uncle of Queen Elizabeth II. Our town was actually given its name by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway causing outrage amongst the local business owners who felt they should have a say in the official naming of their community, In his letter Hays stated that the name Prince George would make our community “permanently distinguished from the numerous towns now called Fort George, South Fort George, etc., which are in the vicinity.’ It is also believed that this name was given to illustrate that our community was the only area that was fully endorsed by the Rail- way. Therefore, despite a public outcry from locals our town became officially known as Prince George. Feel free to break out this awesomely interesting tidbit at your next social Hrudrew Bakley Holiday! Celebrate! ANDREW BAILEY EDITOR IN CHIEF Here is a list of Holidays between now and the next issue of OTE that you might not know about but should definitely plan to celebrate, You're welcome. December 2"*- National Fritters Day This day is to be spent eating nothing but fritters. I suggest you go with banana but, then again, I've never met a fritter I didn't like. December 4"- National Cookie Day Keep the oatmeal and raisins far away. It's a holiday! Not a health convention! December 6"- Andrew Bailey's Birthday Gift ideas: anything shiny will work. He's a big fan of shiny December 7" - National Cotton Candy Day In the absence of any type of fair in which cotton candy would normally be available, your local grocery store should be able to provide you with “Fluffy Stuff” which is cotton candy in a convenient chip bag. Enjoy. December 8- National Brownie Day Over the Edge is the official independent publishing media of students at the University of Northern British Columbia. As such, it is our mandate to report on issues of interest to students in the Northern Region. We encourage all students, both on the main and regional campuses to submit to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is part of the Canadian Uni- versity Press network of papers, otherwise known as CUP. CUP is an organization that is entirely owned by member papers, and provides such services as a news wire and advertising to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is published every second week during the fall and winter semesters. But it's a holiday, not Woodstock, so keep it clean hippies! Blast from OtE’s Past! ARIA HANNOLYN CHENG PHOTO EDITOR Every now and then, an OtE staff person would look through our vast archive of previous issues and find a gem. It may be a historical moment in this fine newspaper's _ his- tory, it may be a submission that seems absolutely ludicrous now, or maybe even a photo of a great (or not so great) event that happened somewhere on campus. This issue's “Blast from OtE’s Past” (I just realized - say- ing just“O.T.E.” really fast sounds exactly like“oatey’... and I bet you're now saying it to see if I’m right ;-) ), is taken from Wednesday, November 13th, 1996 - Volume 3, Issue 6. Please note that we have taken the time to purposely leave in the spelling and grammar mistakes in order to preserve its quality from the period. Editorial (The Great Book of Achievements...or Paul's Big Pep Talk) ‘This issue has been one for the record book. We joined the Canadian University Press (CUP). The future of Over The Edge is still tedious at best, but the increased quality both in text and layout feel, will give the paper a broader, brighter future. I would like to take this oppourtunity, on behalf of the volunteer staff that has backed the paper, to invite everyone at UNBC to write for the paper. Our future can only be improved with the addition of new blood to the process. The volunteer staff has dedicated a great deal of time and energy to putting nineteen consec- utive issues of Over The Edge to press during the eighteen months that I’ve been here. The previous administrations that governed Over The Edge produced eight issues over the course of one year for a total of twenty-seven. Most of these issues would not have been published had it not been for the creativeness and dedication of students at UNBC. Wed like to hear from you more often. So, submit those letters! Complain! Protest! Praise! We are here to be your voice! Use us! Amplify your opinion 3,000 times! So, beginning next semester... It’s time. The newspaper is now financially stable, has a core of dedicated staff looking for expansion and will be literally covering every event we can. I don't know if I will be here, seeing as a dedication to my University courses is in order. However, there are things in the works that are for you, the student body. And, provided that all goes well, Over The Edge is head- ing nowhere but up. The sky’s the limit.
