January 13 2003 NEWS Over The Edge Page 11 BC Premier Caught Driving Impaired in Hawaii By Dana Schwehr According to Maui police, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on January 11, 2003. Campbell is currently on vaca- tion in Hawaii, and was driving home from having dinner with some friends, at 1:23 am, when he was arrested for drunk dri- ving. Campbell spent about UNBC Receives $2 Million to Research Off-shore four hours in jail before bail of $257 was paid. A tentative court date has been set for March 25. In Hawaii, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (OUI) is considered to be a “petty misdemeanor”. The penalties for a first time offense include a possible sentence of two to five days jail time, a pos- sible 72 hours of community Oil and Gas Extraction service, a $150 - $1000 fine, three month license suspen- sion, a mandatory 14-hour alcohol abuse rehabilitation program, and a mandatory alcohol assessment. The legal blood alcohol content in Hawaii is 0.08%, and the accused can choose to take a blood test, a breathalyzer test, or neither. However, the accused is not allowed to contact an attorney until after he or she has cho- sen one of the tests.
