recognize it,” laughed Dalgleish.

But the old trainman was terribly in ear-
nest and not to be laughed at.

“T hate the awful thing myself, sr. But
I always feel drawd to stay right here, so’s
not to miss it. Ghosts are like that, mister.
Besides, I have the signals to make just at
the siding below the cabin trail.”

At that moment the ruddy-faced passen-
ger shouldered his way out again to the rear
platform. He had put on his overcoat and
was apparently bent on staying out in the
cool air for a while. As he passed and
stumbled over the sergeant’s feet Dalgleish
fancied he could detect a strong odour of
liquor, and from the heavy eyes of the man
it looked as if he had been on a drinking
bout. He was of the type, too, that might
be quarrelsoime in his cups.

He seated himself in the far corner where
he had been before. The surroundings were
dank and dismal through which the train
hurtled. The trainman was on the other
side from the big man, leaning against the
rail and still facing the sergeant.

Suddenly he pointed across to the bush.

“That’s the place. Just over there,
mister,” he said.

“The hell you say!” shouted the big man.
‘Haven't you finished yattering that balon-
ey yet? Thought you'd ’a’ done an hour
since.

Dalgleish glanced over at him, surprised
at such a show of bad temper and bad
manners, and as he glanced, a door in his
memory opened and he fancied he saw in
the fat, rotund man before him, shadowy
in the gloomy surrounding, a slender, tall,
rather good looking, medium aged man that
he saw in the courtroom and had arrested
fifteen years before. If this wasn’t Dan
Kelly, he thought, it must be Dan Kelly’s
double, gone soft and fat.

Right then his thought was blasted when
the old trainman shouted out excitedly.

‘My God. There it is—see? There it is!”

The hair at the back of the sergeant’s
neck stood out and a cold shudder ran
through him, and down his spine, at the
frightened intensity of the trainman’s voice.

Dalgleish was always a man with both
feet on the ground; a strong determined
man, and not easily given to vagaries in
imagination. But as the trainman stared
across the track in frozen horrer the ser-
