This can be done as a two-week course at the Justice Institute, or as the Corps’ own course, which Cannon says predates the provincial requirement and is actually stricter. Level III First Aid is definitely preferred. Some self-defense training is offered, but physical force is always a _ last resort. Continued on Page 10. They prefer “verbal judo”, accord- ing to Cannon. The most dif- ficult requirement is probably the security clearance, which is done by Ottawa and is an extensive screening. This is the only part Cannon herself does not do. As well as the general training, the Corps NEW Library hours for the WINTER TERM Starting January 2, 2002 The library will be open: Circulation and Reserve Service: Thank you to all the wonder- ful, generous people who does site-specific training. For UNBC, this includes a tour of the labs, WHMIS and fire extingu.sher use. Cannon says UNBC is fun, because the people are friendly and it’s “a little com- munity”, where there is always something new hap- pening. Her staff seem to agree: although security is generally a high-turnover job, almost all of the regulars have been here over two years. The ones that do tend to leave are the employees who are only on the casual board, who move on if they find full-time positions else- where. The Security Desk is the site for the UNBC lost and found box. Cannon says people here are very good Friday 8:00am - 5:45pm Saturday 10:00am - 5:45pm Sunday 12:00pm - 9:45pm Reference Service: Monday - Thursday 10:00am - 7:00pm Friday 10:00am - 5:00pm Saturday 12:00pm - 4:00pm Sunday 2:00pm - 6:00pm about turning items in. Anything turned in is held for at least ninety days, and if it is still unclaimed after that sold at the annual Lost & Found Sale. Proceeds go into a fund with which Security does something for students, such as pancake breakfasts. Cannon says that the Corps has a good rapport with the RCMP, whom the contract obliges them to call in the event of trouble, such as drunk drivers or drugs. She claims that most such problems actually come from non-students who come up from downtown. They encounter far more health problems than criminal behaviour. Often, these have to be sent down to the hospital to be checked out. Cannon says it only takes the ambu- lance ten minutes to get here. The Corps can also refer people to the university coun- selors, who make themselves available twenty-four hours a day for emergencies. If you have a chronic health prob- lem, such as asthma, aller- gies, or diabetes, you don’t have to tell Security, but Cannon welcomes it, as it makes First Aid much easier if the problem is already known. Corrections and Additions The previous issue of Over the Edge claimed that in the article of out of the Spotlight. The Cafeteria interviewee stated that UNBC gets 40% of food sales. The correction is that the university does get a percentage of food sales, but the percentage, which is calculated on a graduated scale, is roughly 5 to 10 per- cent. Food Services manager, Terry Wells, has confirmed that his company’s headquar- ters are in the United Kingdom. It has also been confirmed that bake sale guidelines do currently exist. A copy has been supplied to Over the Edge by the secre- tary to the Vice President (Administration and Finance), Peggy Crough. Who by the way says that she “never misses an issue” of Over the Edge. So courtesy of Peggy Crough here are the current Guidelines Bake Sale Guidelines Student Clubs wishing to hold a bake sale on campus should put forward their request to the NUGSS exec- utive for consideration. The requesting party is responsi- ble for providing dishes, cut- lery, glasses, etc. (normally plastic). This was imple- mented so as to not cause additional work for the ser- vice staff in the cafeteria. The requesting party is to ensure that the food served is homemade food and not items purchased from anoth- er food service vendor such as Boston Pizza, Fortune Palace, etc. and brought onto campus. An email is sent to the requesting party approving the request and outlining the guidelines. This email is copied to T. Wells and G. Medhurst for their informa- tion.
