Town Council Kt Kok + The first general Town Council Meeting was held Monday, March 5th in the Community Centre. Only ten citizens of Cassiar attended but a few lively discussions were held, especially concerning dogs and gar- bage cans - problems which the Council] has been trying to solve for two years. Regarding the dog situation, most people feel that even though we now have a dog catcher and pound the problem still exists. The Council said they would contact the Dog Catcher and see if he could perhaps get a helper to assist during his working hours - Any other suggesttons? The council has also been trying to get rid of the 45 gallon drums presently used as garbage cans, and would like everyone to use standard galvanized cans of approxi- mately 30 gallon capacity. The council has agreed to subsidize each householder by buying the first galvanized can. Have you ever tried lifting a 45 gallon drum filled with garbage onto a truck? We will also ask that the cans be kept off the roads to help beautify our town. A survey of all residents will be taken -- please do you part vy completing the quest- ionairre when it comes around. Also, the council members are represent- _ing you. Everyone knows who their represent -atives are. If you have any changes, recommendations or constructive thoughts, please contact them. ‘Your Television & Radio...... Len Werner will be carrying a colwm in our paper each tssue. Any questions concern: tng esther radio and television’ are wel- comed. dust address your comments to Len c/o The Asbestos Sheet. As we all now know, the CBC-Anik Telsat television system is working smoothly. It started up with little problem in early - February and hasn't blown up yet, so we can expect to enjoy our colour programming now -or at least until the satellite falls. However, there are likely a few question -s in people's minds, so we'll try to give the closest answer to some of these: 1. Why don't we get the late movies? This seems to be a monetary problem of royalties. CBC and their movie suppliers are trying to work out just how much more should be paid by CBC because they are showing the movies to a larger audience now. 2. What's that wave that keeps gotng up and down my screen? Don't bother trying to adjust or filter it out because it's a problem we just can't do anything about. As near as the CBC technicians can determine, it's move- ment is caused by our power not always being at exactly the same phase (60 cycles per second) as that of the transmitter down south. They are, however, trying to work out a solution. 3. Are we getting a stronger or better stgnal than the tapes dtd? But a stronger signal, no; we are using the same transmitter as ‘before and putting out the same power. 4. Can this equipment give us more than one channel? No. The Telsat receiver can receive any of the 25 or so channels from the satellite (of which only three are now in use, all by CBC) but like your TV set, only one at a time. Even if it could, our CBC transmitter is only one channel. That's about all the common questions, If there are any others, send them in, and we'll do our best to answer them. The system does operate quite automati- cally, even turns itself on and off. It is checked daily by a person in Cassiar, to ensure its continued operation as well as to try to determine the cause if it fails. Next month, in this column we'll cover some points on colour sets and antennas. for those lucky souls who have bought or are going to buy colour receivers. In the meantime, here's a thought: In Cassiar, an expensive, all-channel V.HF-UHF multi-element antenna is as useful as a Volkswagon with a Corvette engine on icy roads. -Anyone can build a simple antenna which will do as good a job as the best available commercial model. All it costs is the lead-in wire. Details next month. If anyone notices televiston signal ts off during normal vtewing hours, please eall: . Evenings & Weekdays 778-7252 Working Days 778-7435 Ext. 293
