MASS PSYCHOLOGY is now one
of the most important factors in crime
waves.

of obtaining a lot of money with a
little luck lowers the public standard
of indignation” to where a_ bank
robber is looked upon as a_ hero
rather than an outcast.

These beliefs were expressed at
Nanaimo by Dr. M. Giunio Zorkin.

He drew on his experience as a
representative on the Allied war
commission and as a former lawyer in
Yugoslavia to trace the tolerance to
crime.

Major application of mass psy-
chology was made during the Second
World War in crimes that later
appalled the world and have left their
mark on the post-war generation, he
said.

lower standard of moral indignation,
just as whole communities and coun-
tries became adjusted in wartime to
atrocities.

Dr. Zorkin said that human nature
is covered by a “thin coat of civiliza-
tion.” It took but a scratch to reveal
the much stronger animal instinct,
which was a sign of present-day mass
psychology to crime.

He feared that the early “dis-
proven” theory of the Italian crim-
inologist, Prof. Lesare Lombroso,
that 80 per cent of crime is committed
by “born criminals,” is now being
borne out by the influence of mass
psychology.

“Mass psychology is one of the most
important factors in criminology to-
day,” he warned. * *
