Elizabeth Fry was born in 1780, into a wealthy family, but gave up her luxuries when she married Joseph Fry (a Quaker) in 1797. When Elizabeth Fry -became aware of the horrible conditions in London’s Negate Prison (no beds, bedding, «toilets, heat, ventilation, or light for the four hundred womyn and their fifty children imprisoned there), she was so appalled, she made prison reform her life’s work. Her priorities were to ensure that these womyn and children (some of whom were even mutilated as punishment for petty theft) had cleaner surroundings, and were educated in a trade; she established societies for when they were discharged. Elizabeth was often consulted by other countries when new prisons were built. She died in 1845. Hats off to Elizabeth Fry and all the E. Fry Societies, for all their inspiring work!
