it was loaded into tubs and hoisted on to waiting ships. Prospecting parties were or- ganized, but it was not until 1853, when miners were brought out from Scotland, that any attempt was made at mining. In that year, shipment of two thousand tons from what is now known as Nanaimo gave British Columbia’s coal industry its begin- ning. The old chief who first shipped Island coal became known as Coal Tyee and, show- ing how the Indian’s curiosity led to the development of a major British Columbia Phone HI ghland 2156 Consolidated Cod Fishermen’s Ass'n N. Fish Dock industry, his picture with top hat of the period and a greatly-prized shawl has ever since been a virtual trade-mark for Island coal. Even the area which became the great city of Vancouver was almost entirely pre- empted, in 1860, by officers of the Royal Engineers, the British Navy and Crown Colony Government as a coal field. Coal Harbour was so named because of coal dis- coveries on its shore. Dead Man’s Island was once known as Coal Island and Stanley Park, Coal Peninsula. Pre-emptions extended from Port Moody to Point Grey, but very few were taken up, although a survey party from H.MS. Plumper took two tons of coal from the foot of Richards Street. Fortunate are the people of communities in which a natural production always meets the needful consumption of fuel for home and industry. They need not fear the fluc- tuation of supply or tariffs. And while the consumption of the dif- ferent types of fuel may vary through popu- lar fancy or supply, Vancouver Island coal remains the consistent choice. Governments may commandeer fuel oils in times of national crises, closed sawmills reduce output of wood fuels, but British Columbia’s vast coal fields, which have pro- duced $366,000,000 in mining wealth, have as yet only been tapped. While coal mining in this province for a time was at a very low ebb, it has gradually been staging a comeback as shown in an in- crease of 100,000 tons in 1937 production over 1936 figures. By far the largest pro- portion of this increase was noted on Van- couver Island. The Island coal fields, almost at Wancou- ver’s back door, give guarantee of certain supply, of uniformity in grading and high British Thermal Units rating and of a price free from the tariffs or long transportation costs of imported coals. Recognition of its superior qualities by those outside the prov- ince has been established in a steady increase of exports. These are important factors to be taken into consideration when budgeting in the best interests of home or business, but per- haps more important for the good of all concerned in the purchase of B. C. coal is the encouragement of one of the province's greatest industries, of increased payrolls ang increased buying power. Every householder or business head who buys a ton of Island coal gives a B. C. miner a day’s wage. Every need for fuel is answered in Island coal, which is graded and typed for stoker, coking, furnace, range or fireplace. Every ton of Island coal, whether hand- fired or automatically stoked and thermo. statically controlled, gives the maximum in uniform heat and buying value. .
